Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 2

To the Church in Ephesus

2 “To the angel[a] of the church in Ephesus write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. 6 But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

7 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Most of you know by now that, last Wednesday I had to euthanize my beloved Penny. Although I have had to go through this before, as Penny was the fifth dog in my life, it seems much harder this time.

However, something very unusual has been happening. I have received a number of Sympathy Cards, specially designed for the loss of a pet. That is not uncommon. What is uncommon though is the fact that these cards are filled with hand-written letters from the senders. Some of these letters filled every blank space on the card with beautifully-worded expressions of sympathy, glowing memories of Penny, and helpful words for me. It was as if this painful experience has ushered in a new resurgence of the Ancient Art of Letter-Writing. With Ink. On Paper. It had been so long since I had received an actual LETTER from somebody, that it was overwhelming. Of course we all still send greeting cards, and sometimes they have a printed form letter attached, and we all get texts, email, and postings on Social Websites, but actual LETTERS seem to have become a thing of the past...except for this time. It has been a healing experience, and I am so grateful.

Now, imagine getting a personal letter from God. That is what we will be looking at in the next seven segments of our study on "Prayer Through The Bible". These Letters are addressed to individual First-Century Churches in Asia Minor, but they also could be addressed to all of us. They all contain Commendation, Issues that need Correction, and a Resolution. That's the way the Inspired Prophets of God have always presented: "Good News/Bad News/Solution" (not always in that order). In fact, if a Prophet only presents Doom and Gloom, or only happy fortunate auspices, or only preaches condemnation without a solution, then it's probably OK to be skeptical of the prophecy. Even Jeremiah, right in the middle of the saddest Book in the Bible, (Lamentations) has a Passage about the Steadfast Love of The Lord, which never ceases, and His Mercies, which are new every morning.

The First Letter is to the Church in Ephesus. First, the Commendation: The Church is doing everything right. They are hard-working, resiliant people who don't put up with phonies or evil-doers. They endure hardship and persecution. What spiritual thing could such people be lacking?

It seems that what they are lacking is the most important thing of all. Jesus says that "They have lost their First Love." It would seem that they had worked so hard to have the perfect church that were neglecting the Love for Jesus and for each other.

The solution is repentance. The lack of love is a sin so egregious that it can bring about the condemnation of this whole church. However, they do have a solution, and need to get right on it.

When we spoke of Prayer, we mentioned what is perhaps the most difficult knd, that of "Listening". While very few people hear audible messages from God, we do have a Personal Letter, His Word. If one's behavior doesn't match up, or if a prophecy contradicts The Word, it's time to change the behavior and reject the "prophecy". After all, we have it in writing.
