Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 1

John’s Vision of Christ

9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,[d] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels[e] of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
How Glorious,
How Hallowed,
and How Wonderful!
You Alone Are Worthy Of Praise
For You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are Worthy,
And You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham!
We Thank You For Your Holy Word,
Even When it Doesn't Seem to fit in with our finite way of thinking,
even if it "rubs us the wrong way",
even if it "doesn't seen fair".
For Your Ways are so above our ways, who can fathom it?

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

There are many books and stories about people who have had "Near-Death-Experiences" and Visions of Heaven. Some of them make sense, and others, not so much. How do we discern which are true and which are just the imagination or brain disfunction of those reporting these Visions? While I am not doubting the sincerity of these reports, we do have to discern whether they are Wishful Thinking, Dreams, Imagination, or the Real Thing.

There are at least four people in the Hebrew Bible who decribed a Vision of Heaven: Jacob's Ladder, Ezekiel's Wheel, Zechariah's Holy Temple, And Isaiah's Vision of the Throne of God. In the New Testament, we have the Testimony of Stephen, Paul, and John of Patmos. One could also include Peter and James, as they witnessed (along with John) the Transfiguration of Christ. In all of these events, the initial reaction is the same: a Holy Awe that causes the visionary to fall upon his face in fear. An Angel, or God, or Jesus has to say "Fear Not", or else the visionary would probably die of terror right then and there.

This, unfortunately, is not a feature of many "Visit to Heaven" stories. Most of these stories involve a warm, cuddly, tunnel of light, meeting up with deceased people, and lots of hugs. While this is a lovely way to imagine Heaven, it doesn't agree with the descriptions we encounter in the Word of God. The reunions and warm hugs come after the "Fear Not." Even John, the Beloved Disciple, Witness to The Transfiguration, Resurrection, Ascension, and the Infilling of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, had to be assured to "Fear Not". The Vision of Heaven is so Awesome that there is no other reaction to it in a human's First Encounter.

I am reminded of William Shatner's reaction to his first actual trip into space. He was so struck with awe that he could barely get out a complete sentence. And that was just a sub-orbital flight!

In Today's Reading, we get a description of the Throne of God. There are a number of Symbols, which Jesus explains to John. The Seven Stars and Seven Golden Lampstands are symbols of Seven Churches in Asia Minor (now part of Greece and Turkey). They could also be Seven TYPES of Churches, or Seven Eras in Church History. All of these theories about the Churches have validity, but I believe they were actual congregations with real issues. Since a way of praying is Listening to what God has to say to us, we will examine the Letters one by one, starting tomorrow.

(You might want to fasten your seat belt, put your tray tables up, and return your seat to the upright position. We will be meeting some Turbulance ahead.)
