Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over All The Earth!
The Heavens Declare Your Glory,
And All of Your Creation Sings Your Praises!
Holy, Righteous, Just, and True,
Who is Like You?
There is No Other.
For You Alone Are Worthy,

Just a few days ago, a nominee for the high office of United States Supreme Court Justice was asked if she would give a defininition of "Woman". Her reply, which was clothed in equivocation and political correctness, was "I am not a biologist."

SERIOUSLY? In my opinion, this disqualified her for any responsible position of authority whatsoever, especially one which impacts my life and the life of my Nation and the Free World.

Even Pop Songwriters know what a woman is. ("Just Like a Woman"(Bob Dylan), "Always A Woman To Me" (Billy Joel), "I Am Woman" (Helen Reddy) etc) Some of the songs about women are not complimentary, but there are a lot of Pop Songs that insult MEN too.

The point is that we are Different. Even children know the difference. The first question my students ask me when I tell them about my dog is:

Is it a boy-dog or a girl-dog?"

My sister had a beloved female cat for many years, and now she has a male, and guess what? They are different. One does not have to be a biologist to make that determination. Anyway, back to our Bible Study!

We are now looking at the Apostle John in the context of Prayer. Since John was believed to be a youth, and because he talked a lot about Love, artist have often depicted him as sexually ambiguous, and sometimes even effeminate. (Ugh). It has been very difficult to choose Art from the Western Canon depicting John, because I refuse to go that route. Even the famous "Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci depicted John as so "soft" that author Dan Brown wrote an entire novel around the painting, claiming that the Apostle who leaned on Jesus was actually Mary Magdeline! (nonononono!) And so, I am choosing a lot of Eastern Orthodox Icons, which show John with a full beard and a little older. In the Eastern Tradition, there is always a Book or a Scroll and writing materials pictured with John. That is because, in the Orthodox Canon on Iconography, certain symbols go with certain saints so that they are easily identified, either in youth or old age. John is pictured with writing tools because he wrote the Gospel, at least three letters, and the Book of Revelation. Like Paul, he is responsible for a big chunk of the New Testament.

Like Paul and Peter, John writes a lot about the "Three Theologicl Virtues" which are Faith, Hope, and Love. John's emphasis is LOVE, both in his Gospel and in his Letters. The Love he speaks of is a Greek word "agape" which is much more than mere human love. It is the Love that comes from God. There are six other words in Greek that describe other kinds of human love, but agape stands alone. There is nothing "mushy" or equivocal about it.

Who would have thought that the travesty occurring in Washington right now would have inspired Today's Thread?
