Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

1 Peter 5

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Last Night, I was alerted to a Tornado Warning in Texas. Having many friends in Texas, and quite a few of them subscribing to this Daily Thread, I logged onto a Livestream that was tracking the Tornado.

The announcer, Ryan, had a direct live feed from six different "Storm Chasers" that were placed around the margins of the main screen, which was a live feed from the National Weather Service's Radar Station in Granger, Texas. There was a live chat running down the sidebar with thousands of comments going by so fast I couldn't read them all.

Dozens of towns were in the path of the Monster Super-Cell which was spawning Tornados left and right. The larger cities like Austin and Dallas were in the path, as well as smaller towns with unfamiliar names. To make matters worse, the tornadoes were cloaked in rain, so they could not be detected with the naked eye. The Storm-Chasers' feeds were cutting out , causing concern about their safety. Then, the Radar Station at Grainger was hit by a Tornado and the screen froze. Now Ryan could only rely on the visual reports from the Storm-Chasers and the Live Chat reports. The stress was not-stop, as alarms, buzzers, visual sightings, and warnings kept interrupting the narrator.

Ryan had been Live-Streaming for nearly four hours without a break and he was starting to get tired. Then, he mispronounced tha name of one town, "Guadeloupe". Suddenly, the Chat Feed was invaded by what we call here "The Pronunciation Nazis". Comment after comment came in with the "correct" pronunciation, long after the Tornadoes had moved on from that particular town. There were even people saying that Ryan had insulted the Patron Saint of Mexico by mispronouncing her name! Meanwhile, Ryan was pleading with people, town by town, to seek shelter, and ended up mispronouncing a few more. So then, the Pronunciatian Nazis started correcting him on those towns too. Ryan's defenders began to chime in, saying things like "KNOCK IT OFF! THIS IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH!!!" The stress was over-the-top.

I e-mailed my Texas and Oklahoma friends and prayed. Suddenly, Brent, one of the Storm-Chasers, had a perfect rainbow on his feed.

The Radar came back up and the storms were still raging, but the chat suddenly stopped raging about the Pronunciation of "Guadeloupe". Now, all they could see was the tiny live feed on the bottom right, of "Brent's Rainbow".

I went to bed and prayed all night for our Friends in Texas and Oklahoma.

Peter talks about the devil prowling around seeking whom he can devour. Satan uses little things to distract us, especially when we are trying to pray. These are usually things that make us indignant, or moralistic, or critical of others. Like for the Pharisees of Jesus's time, nit-picking is the adversary's spcialty. Hyper-sensitivity to minutia such as spelling, grammar, tone, pronunciation, and so on, can very easily distract from the Big Picture and can bring on Death and Destruction. If lives were lost because Ryan was unable to warn residents of one town because the chat line was arguing about the name of another town, it would have been a victory for the devil. It's how he operates.

Ryan Hall is terrific. I too was watching on YouTube, having family and friends in Texas I was concerned. Ryan was live for 9 hours! He does so much better than the regular weathermen and is only 28 years old.
