Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

1 Peter 1

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

Praise to God for a Living Hope

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

In Massachusetts, Bumper Stickers are everywhere. There is even one that mocks the Boston Accent: "BUMPAH STICKAH", and, of course lots of political and religious statements. My favorite is a very simple one, with no words, just three symbols: a Cross, an Anchor, and a Heart. It doesn't take much pondering to realize that these symbols stand for "Faith, Hope, and Love".

Paul had a lot to say about "Love" in 1 Corinthians. The Author of Hebrews dedicated all of Chapter 11 to Faith. And now, Peter the Apostle tells us about Hope.

The Anchor is the symbol that usually stands for "Hope". Imagine being in a little boat on a huge ocean. Even the non-sailors among us can relate to that feeling, because life is often like that. It is very common to feel adrift and all alone. However, if your little boat has a good anchor, you can moor the boat for the night, catch some fish, rest, and refresh yourself for the journey ahead. And, when you do reach your destination, the anchor steadies you, and establishes you firmly in your home port. Peter calls this a "Living Hope". We do not place our Hope in something that is not real, but in the Living, Resurrected Christ.

These Three "Theological Virtues" do not work independently of each oher, but in concert. As it says in Proverbs, "A Three-strand rope is not easily broken". Even in Music, it takes at least three harmonizing notes to make a Chord. So it is with "Faith, Hope, and Love".

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
