Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

James 5

Patience in Suffering

7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

NearlyALL Christians believe that Christ will return. It is promised in the First Chapter of the Book of Acts, and echoed in the Ancient Creeds. It is the Main Theme of the entire Book of Revelation, and Paul mentions it in a number of his Letters. Indeed, except for a few sects that spiritualize everything, and some that say Jesus already came back (in 1914?), we have a near consensus. What we don't agree on is WHEN this is going to happen. And, although we are told clearly NOT to set dates, people do it all the time. Then the date passes, nothing happens, and the World laughs at Christianity. Books and prophets come and go, and we are still waiting.

The current situation in the the East bears a startling resemblence to the confederations of nations lined up in Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38. Russia, Turkey, Syria, Iran (Persia), and the European Union are all familiar from the books in the 1970's that predected the End of the World. In those days, the EU was called the "European Common Market" and Russia was the USSR, but the countries were the same. And then, of course, there is little tiny Israel. What does Israel have to do with The Ukraine? Why is Russia talking about the Golan Heights? Why is Iran (Persia) so prominent in this conflict? And what about China and it's huge army? It really makes you wonder!

James cautions Believers not to panic when these events start taking place. He tells us to wait patiently. And, of course, keep praying!
