Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

James 1

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:

Greetings.

Trials and Temptations

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

My Brother Ed and his Wife raise chickens. They have a nice little roadside business selling fresh, organic eggs, and I enjoy gourmet omelets and egg sandwiches all the time!

Now, just like me, Ed was raised in the City of Boston, went to Boston Public Schools, worked for years as an Auto Body mechanic, and is a certified "City Guy". When he first started raising chickens, he had a lot to learn. He built a magnificent Chicken-House for the hens, with an antique window rescued from the barn, heat lamps, nesting boxes that were twice the legal limit in spaciousness, two outdoor pens that were caged even underground to protect from predators, various natural-wood perches, and plenty of room. What he did NOT count on was the meanness of those birds, from which we get the expression "Pecking Order". One hen was designated as the victim, and all the other hens picked on her till she had no feathers left on her head. Ed had to build a separate pen for her so she could recover. Then, he found a bird pinned down under the gate and pecked to death. It was hard to imagine the hens doing such a heinous thing so various excuses were made for them (the victim had gotten stuck under the gate and the other hens were trying to rescue her, etc...). Ed knew that any new chickens had to be raised separately until they were big enough to defend themselves before joining the flock. And so, the saga continues, but those eggs sure are tasty!

Wolves and other Canines also have a heirarchy that ensures the survival of the pack. The head male and female are called "Alphas". There are also "Betas" and, finally, at the very bottom, the Omega. The Omega takes the blame for everything that goes wrong and is often seen intervening into conflict and taking the punishment. This is to ensure Peace within the pack so that they are not scattered. Any wolf that breaks the "rules" is expelled, and becomes the legendary "Lone Wolf". A lone wolf does not survive very long.

Tuesday of this week, I will be looking at 11 years of widowhood. In the intervening years, I have had many adventures, moves, disasters, and losses, but no "romances", even though I am free to pursue such a thing if I really want to. It would be nice to have a friend who likes to ride motorcycles, or someone to watch a movie with, but I am not actively looking for anybody. It might have something to do with my own personality, which Pop Psychology would call an "Alpha". Alphas are competent, independent, energetic, and always want to be "In Charge". Sometimes these positive qualities can go overboard and cause conflict, alienation, and, finally, stress-related illness and early death. They can also bring about loneliness, as an Alpha clashes with an Alpha mate, but doesn't respect a "Beta" whom she can boss around. And so, if we were merely soulless animals, our lives would be like those of mambers of a wolf pack (or even a chicken coup). Fortunately, we are not wolves or chickens, although sometimes we act like them.

As I approached the book of James in a study of Prayer, I did so with some trepidation. I always thought of James as a rather stern, strict, saint who set standards that were difficult to achieve. He seemed to be what we now call a "Type A Personality" or, an "Alpha". Since I am also a "Type A" the clash was inevitable! James talks about perseverence, putting up with injustice, and (horrors!) TAMING THE TONGUE. If James had been my Pastor, I imagine I would have been having run-ins with him all the time.

I didn't think there would be anything about Prayer in the book of James, but he starts right off with it. He says:

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

But He follows that up with this:

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

When we pray, we must BELIEVE. Without Faith, prayer is just empty words. Without Faith, we can recite the most beautiful, poetic, emotionally-charged prayers that will be totally ineffectual. We are not chickens, nor are we wolves. Chickens and Wolves do what they do because of instinct. It's the Survival of the Fittest, and does not recognize the qualities of Mercy, Grace, Faith, Kindness, Goodness, or Self-Control. We, however, have something they don't have. We are not enslaved by Instinct or Pop Psychology. We have Our Alpha and Our Omega. He is the One who took the punishment for our sins, brought us peace, and is the King of the Universe.

You know...I think I could grow to like this guy, James. I wonder if he rides a Harley.
