Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Ephesians 6

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.]

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Nearly 30 years ago, my husband and I rode our Harleys to Washingtom DC for Rolling Thunder, and then decided to take a "side trip" to Virginia Beach to visit my Dear Friend Lil. She happened to be "on leave" from her epic Missionary trip to an Iron Curtain country. We had no idea where she was going next, and wanted to spend some quality time with her.

Mike had a luxurious bike known as an "Ultra Classic", which had a windshield and fairings (shields) all around. I was on an 1100 Sporster with a little clamp-on windshield. The ride to DC was uneventful, but the ride to Virginia Beach was a shaker. The 22 mile Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge was exciting and fun, but I realized that the Sportster, that didn't even have a rubber-mounted engine, vibrated too much on that kind of ride. And so, we pulled into Hampton Roads Harley Davidson to trade the Sportster in for a heavier, more powerful bike. That was when I purchased "Blue", my 93FXR Superglide, which I still ride to this day. It didn't have a windshield, but I could take care of that when I got home. I got a very good trade on the Sportster (turns out it was a collector's item) and adapted my riding style to the FXR immediately. I LOVED it. And so, we began the journey home to Boston.

By the time we got to Baltimore on I95, it started to rain. Not only was it raining buckets, but trucks were sending up huge sprays of filthy water from the road, with sand, rocks, and whatever else was on the road. It was nasty! The rain was hitting my chest at 60 mph and felt like bullets. We huddled under an overpass for a while, but those were few and far between, as that part of I95 is raised up over the city. In other words, it IS the "overpass". When we finally ended our journey, the entire front of my jacket was soaked through and caked with mud. Hubby, on the other hand, was nearly unscathed because his bike had a windshield. He had offered to swap bikes, but I wasn't tall enough to ride his. And so, the first modification that Blue got was a nice after-market windshield from "Memphis Fats". It fit perfectly and Blue took me to 7 more Rolling Thunders, The Appalachians, Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Florida Keys. There has been rain, but the windshield kept it from being unbearable.

Paul speaks of "The Shield of Faith". He describes the attacks of the enemy as "Fiery Darts". Like the rain on I95, the assault is constant. One raindrop is not a problem. Even a few of them, with respite in between, doesn't hurt so much. But, an unrelenting barrage of raindrops, beating at you at 60 mph, becomes a real battle. It is then that you need a windshield. In our walk with the Lord, that windshield is our FAITH. No matter what the enemy throws at us, our Faith is our shield.

I am sure Paul would have loved to have a Harley to scoot around Greece, Asia Minor, and Judea. The Roman Roads would have made it easy. But since the Roman Roads were paved with cobblestones, Paul would have to have made sure he had a rubber-mounted engine. And, of course, a windshield. (Ride Free, Dear Brother!)
