Ephesians 6

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.]

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Christmas decorations have all been put away, and the stores are filled with Valentine decorations: hearts, hearts, hearts, EVERYWHERE. Who knew that the magnificently-designed vascular pump that keeps us alive would become the universal symbol for ROMANCE?

The main focus of Body Armor is the part that covers the torso. An arm, leg, or shoulder wound is awful, but the torso is where the vital organs are. A wound to the chest or abdomen can result in instant death. Ancient Armorers knew this and so designed their armor to protect the Heart with a Breastplate. This practice has continued from ancient to modern times, from iron to steel, to chain mail, and finally to composite materials like Kevlar. The Breastplate could be heavy and a little clunky, but was worth it.

Paul uses the Breastplate to illustrate Righteousness. Righteousness is a tricky thing, because, if one tries to gin it up themselves, it becomes self-righteousness, which is a sin. In fact, the only people who were lambasted by Jesus when He walked on earth were the Self-Righteous guys. He had very severe words for them, calling them a "Brood of Vipers". He never used those kinds of words to describe the tax-collectors, harlots, and sinners, so why was He so touchy about self-righteous people? Perhaps it is due to the damage self-righteousness does to the Heart.

Remember, The Breastplate covers the Heart. In the Ancient World, the heart was considered the seat of our Emotions, our Passions, and our Affections. Even in our current time, the icon for "LOVE" is a heart-shape. And so, self-righteousness damages the "Heart" because it fosters a critical self-centeredness that judges others as being Unrighteous! As a result, the Heart becomes wicked, a source of oppression and abuse towards others.

A perfect example of this in our own time is "Woke-ism". This malignant philosophy starts out with righteous themes: equality, inclusion, diversity, and respecting others' differences. These all sound like decent ideas. "Anti-Fascism" sounds good too, because the fascists were nasty people. (And they were VERY self-righteous!). All of these nice-sounding ideals quickly morphed into a type of Tyranny, enforced by Social Media, the Entertainment Establishment, and Academia. People who made mistakes YEARS ago get their careers ruined because of Woke-ism. The Self-Righteousness of our aging Woodstock-Era rebels has turned our music icons into loathsome, judgemental, self-righteous, pharissitical FASCISTS who demand the cancelation of anyone who disagrees with Big Government and Big Pharma. Their hearts, fed by self-righteousness, have become cesspools of wickedness.

So why is Paul telling us to clothe ourselves in "Righteousness"?

The Breastplate protects the heart, not with our OWN righteousness, but with the Righteousness of Christ. He is the One Who is Righteous, not I. It is HIS Righteousness that protects my heart from the slander, lies, evil-speaking, woke-ism, false accusations, and wickedness of the world.

So, buckle on that Breastplate and protect Your Heart! (Happy Heart Month!)
