Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent Is Your Name Over All The Earth!
We Praise and Worship You,
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
Blessed Are You Oh LORD,
Our God,
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
LORD of Hosts,
Rock of All Ages!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

(Life by the Spirit)

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Hurricane Wilma tore out a huge banyan tree in my front yard, that blocked the front door. Almost before the "all-clear" was sounded, about ten Caribbean youths from the neighborhood arrived with machetes and chopped the whole thing up, piled it in the yard, and refused to accept my offer of payment. (I have to admit, they were formidible-looking, stripped to the waist, and moving in a body through the neighborhood with their machetes. There is a lesson there too!)) Police, FEMA, and other government agencies were nowhere to be found, and our little neighborhood was on its own. We helped each other out, and cooked outside on grills, as we had no electrical power for a month.

Almost a year later, Broward County offered two free trees to homeowners who had lost trees in the hurricane. I chose an Avocado tree and a Mango Tree and planted them according to the directions. A few years later, the Mango was 20 feet high and absolutely bursting with fruit. I found out that I could pot the seeds and get MORE Mango trees, and they grew just as fast. Now there were regular polite knocks on my door of people asking if they could have a few mangoes. It seems, that even before the mangoes are ripe, there is a Caribbean recipe fr them that is beloved. "Of Course!" I said. "Take as much as you want! And here's a little tree for you yard that I grew in this pot! Enjoy!"

Almost a year to the day after Hurricane Wilma, FEMA showed up with a truck to pick up the neatly-cut-and-stacked wood of the banyan tree that was sitting on my lawn, in the shade of the Mango Tree.

In this brief passage, Paul contrasts two ways of living. Obviously, living in the Spirit of God is preferrable to living in the "Flesh". The lovely qualities of "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" are decribed as "Fruit of the Spirit". The Banyan tree had shallow roots, but took up so much space that it dominated the front of my house. It bore no fruit, and didn't even offer shade because of the tangled mass of trunks that went straight to the ground. It was just like a big tub of green that sat in front, and the wind tipped it over easily. The Mango, however, grew straight and tall. It extended its canopy over the yard, providing shade. Its fruit was abundant, and that fruit had a seed that made a whole new tree. The fruit of that tree caused fellowship and friendship to take root in the community. It was a wonderful illustration of this passage of Scripture.

they are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;

who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonour
who desire my hurt.
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
who say to me, ‘Aha, Aha!’

Amen. This was a great story. We had two tornadoes touch down around here and the neighbors had everything cleaned up to include moving cows to another barn by milking time before FEMA ever heard about the touch downs.
