And so it begins.
This just in from a reader…
My bishop (Venice in Florida) has just (via a letter to his priests) forbidden the use of ad orientem in any Novus Ordo Masses with a congregation. He asserts that the Novus Ordo mandates versus populum and that any other interpretation is false.
It would be interesting to see that letter, wouldn’t it.
Ping
From ad orientem to ad populum to ad nauseum.
The letter is linked in the comments on Fr Z’s site. The bishop’s argument rests 100% on a discredited mistranslation of item #299 in the GIRM. It took me literally 30 seconds with Google to get the evidence to show that it’s a mistranslation.
Does not so mandate.
Ad orientam is the default. Any other interpretation is an invention.
‘The correct translation says that freestanding altars, which permit versus populum, are preferred where possible.’
well, all parishes have freestanding altars, regardless of the age of the church itself...
GIRM 299 is quoting (not sure if it's word-for-word) VCII Sacrosanctum Concilium.
