Prominent Christian Rapper 'Phanatik' of The Cross Movement Publicly Renounces Christianity [see Comment]

Goodwin was one of the co-founders of the influential Christian rap group The Cross Movement,..“I sent a letter to my church withdrawing my membership and saying that I am denouncing the Christian faith that I have believed, professed, proclaimed, and defended for the last 30 years,”...“I literally told God, ‘If I find one more thing in the scriptures that doesn’t have a good explanation without resorting to having to bend over backwards and hop over barrels to explain it—I might lose my faith,”...“It got to the point where the liberal dudes were the ones bringing the most comfort because they were the ones being the most honest about the issues,” he noted.

In the video, Goodwin confirmed the rumors that he had walked away from the faith after spending the last 30 years “traveling the world, preaching to others, preaching to others about what I wholeheartedly believed.” “In those five or six years since seminary when I wasn’t living in the text, all my presuppositions had fallen off,” he added.

Throughout 2021, Goodwin brought his issues to professors who knew the scriptures and the original languages. To his surprise, the professors looking at him were like, “you finally got here.”

Among those he met, one person told Goodwin, “If you can learn to deal with these issues, then you’ll be a mature Christian. To have wrestled with this and found a way to still believe—that’s when you know you’ve made it.”.

At the same time, however, Goodwin felt that adopting liberal Christianity would be uncomfortable and dishonest. As such, Goodwin decided to renounce Christianity altogether. He said in the video that he no longer believes in the gospel or the scriptures despite his understanding of it.

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? (John 1:38)

A soul will find what they truly are looking for, and in which realm souls are tested. I have little regard for "Christian" fitting into the world of "rap," while Goodwin also much lived in academia, and both worlds represent a challenge to faith.

The lifestyle of the former is one thing, a detached intellectualism is often a seduction of of the latter that is contrast to a real life of faith in which our lives are lived in such a way that God must show Himself alive or else all the work will essentially fail.

I think it was brother Andrew who went to a Bible college in England long ago which was free to those who could not affirm it, but students actually did maintenance work (yes, manual work). A were sent out on break to do missionary work with a certain number of pounds which they had to bring all back in poor old England as a result of living/working by faith. Meaning you do God's work and He will provide what you need to do it, as a result of you actually believing the word of God and seeking to diligently obeying it, including in being good stewards of what He provides. And having literally left all to serve God in 1986, I can attest that God is faithful to do so, glory to Him, despite too often my own lack of faith and full obedience.

As far as intellectual challenges, since the Bible is approx. 800,000 words and covers many subjects, persons, places, events over a vast span of time, and often provides duplicate accounts of historical events, and employs many different literary genres and God-inspired writers - and stands in opposition to both the carnal and idolatrous religious nature or man - then it offers much material to those who seek to deny its authority.

And thus the Bible has been examined as with a fine-toothed comb by those who seek to do so, as well as by believers who love it. And such have found that 99.9% of alleged bible contradictions to be sufficiently explained and with none really affecting doctrine (except perhaps the idea that all copies and translations must be preserved exactly as originally given).

While Mr. Goodwin said he consulted professors, I wonder if he even looked outside formal academia to examined such resources as these by those who actually engage what Goodwin has now choose.

Alleged Bible Contradictions Do not be surprised, dear reader, by the size and profuse number of alleged contradictions here. Nor think that this amount proves that the Bible needs defending and "twisting". About 90% of these are due to a not so great ability to read: taking figures of speech, poetry, and cultural expressions literally. Some, whether honestly or not, are misquoted or misused facts. A further few are simply strained and completely made up objections that try to invent a contradiction out of anything. It's only around 5% of these that have legitimate weight and are actual inquiries.

Bible Contradictions? Secularists often accuse the Bible of being full of contradictions. However, when the supposed contradictions are carefully examined, the conflict dissolves.

He’s onto something, and at some point perhaps he will figure out it is manmade with the help of satan.

It’s called Dogma

And it has a long history of killing faith.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

1 Peter 5:8 NIV

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Ephesians 6:12 NIV

Anyone who refuses to believe spiritual warfare is all around us needs to wake up.

There's hope yet.

“It’s not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that scare me. It’s the parts I DO understand!” - Mark Twain

Why publicly denounce God? Trying to “gain the world”? Truth hurts…but leads to salvation. Phanatik followed after his own lusts, not truth

Kind of weird. Presumably, the “liberal dudes” who counseled him and who he praises in this article are still believers but he has chosen to reject Christianity all together.

The breaking point seems to be the American Protestant evangelical tenet of complete Biblical inerrancy. The Catholic formula that the Bible is free of substantial moral error is far more comprehensible and defensible.

From the article. Read that slowly and let one’s lips move. Now read it again.
