Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Romans 1

1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a] was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[c] faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. 7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

A large part of the New Testament is made up of Paul's Letters. Although he probably wrote many more, 13 of his letters are part of the New Testament Canon, and they are packed with Theology, Instruction, Analogy, and, of course, Prayer. Nearly all of them open with a Salutation and a Prayer for the recipient. Some are for individuals, and others for the whole church. Letters that were meant to be passed around were called "Encyclical Letters". Many copies had to be made, all by hand. The originals are long gone, but so many copies were made that there is more original documentation for Paul's Letters than there is for other Classic Works of literature.

Paul's Greeting is a Prayer:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

He starts most of his Letters this way! Then he continues:

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

Here we have a prayer of Thanksgiving, followed a Declaration of God's Grace and Glory, and finally, a Petition, as Paul would love to come to Rome and see the people in the growing Church.

The rest of the first chapter is Theological in nature, but is relevant to this day. One can extrapolate that Paul's concerns are fitting for our own time, with "Green" and "Sexual Identity Politics" flooding our schools and media. But, that is a topic for another day. Today we can see that Paul wasn't just popping out "Tweets" with his letters. They were all prayerfully considered, prayerfully composed, and prayerfully delivered. Paul was a Man of Prayer as well as a Powerful Evangelist.
