Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 10

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along. 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”

27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. 28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b] and praising God.

Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

By now you may have noticed that hardly a chapter goes by in the Book of Acts that doesn't involve Prayer. In this story alone we see:

1. Cornelius Prays to The God He Doesn't Know: This is the Classic "Lord, if You're Out There..." prayer. Cornelius was from a culture that had many gods and goddesses, and had even elevated their emperors to godhood. Saying something doesn't make it true. Not only did one emperor, Caligula, insist that he was a "god" and that his wife (sister!) was a "goddess', he also proclaimed that his horse was a Senator. (We may have senators that are a certain part of a horse's anatomy, but this was different!) Everybody knew that Caligula and Drusilla were not divine, nor was the horse a senator, but they went along with it to stay alive. And so, Cornelius, as an agent of the Roman State, was required to "go along to get along" as well. But he KNEW it was nonsense.

The Jews, however, had something he wanted. They had only ONE God, and that One seemed to be real. He was moved by something deep inside to reach out to that God. This is what Solomon called "Having Eternity in his heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Contemporary evangelists call it "Having a God-shaped hole in the soul, that only God can fill". Whatever you call it, Cornelius had it, and it translated into fervent effectual prayer to The God He Did Not Yet Know.

2. Peter's Prayer to The God He Knew: Peter didn't have any petition in mind when he went up onto the roof to pray. (Roofs in the Middle East are flat, and are used as extra living space). Peter was just praying to The God he Knew. This was his daily practice, what we would call a "Daily Devotional". However, God chose this moment to provide Peter with a revelation that would change the course of Human History.

3. Obedience: Both Cornelius and Peter received instructions from God during their prayers. Both were told to do something unconventional and against their belief systems. Cornelius was told to seek out a fisherman-turned-preacher who was staying in Joppa, which was miles away, and invite this stranger into his home. Peter was told to go with some Roman guys (presumably soldiers) all the way to the pagan city of Caesaria and present himself to a Pagan, Gentile, Roman official! What good could come from such bizarre instructions? And yet, both Cornelius and Peter were obedient to God.

4. The Prayer of Praise: When Cornelius is presented with the Gospel, he immediately comes to Faith, and shows the same gift that Peter experienced on the Day of Pentecost. Sometimes it happens that way, and sometimes not. I happen to be a Pentecostal Believer, but many Christians do not exhibit the same Gifts of the Spirit as I have. They have other gifts that I don't have, and it all balances out. What is constant is the Prayer of PRAISE. God is so Great, Good, Perfect, and Wonderful, that the Praise just flows from our hearts and out through our lips.

We will contnue through the Book of Acts, and stop wherever there is a mention of Prayer. I guarantee, it is going to take some time!

Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
