Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 7
The Stoning of Stephen
54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
How Precious and Glorious is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Adoration
You Alone Are The Most High!
You Alone Are The One True God,
You Are The King of Kings,
LORD of Lords,
and Rock of All Ages,
Our Creator,
You Are Before All Things,
And In You All Things Hold Together.
How We Love You
With Our Whole Heart and Soul
Our Whole Mind and Our Whole Being.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
Let all that has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.
God Bless America.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

St. Stephen's Last Words are remarkably like those of Jesus. Both were innocent men who were murdered by a mob in an agonizing way. Both forgave their attackers by releasing them to The Father for forgeveness. When Jesus taught us to pray The Lord's Prayer, He knew that we would have trouble forgiving the unforgivable. He also knew that there would be circumstances in which we would find it impossible to do any forgiving:
1. Forgiving the Attacker while the Offense is in Progress: When we are under attack, our bodies are flooded with chemicals that give us the means to defend ourselves. We are faced with "Fight or Flight" and can do incredible feats even while in terrible pain. Soldiers in battle experience this, as do ordinary people in emergencies. There is no time for philosophizing, analyzing guilt, or internal debate, when one is being nailed to a cross or being pelted with stones. And yet, both Jesus and Stephen were able to pray for forgiveness for their attackers. However, neither said "I Forgive You" Both said, "Father, forgive Them"
2. Forgiving When the Attacker doesn't even ASK: This is particularly difficult, because sometimes we see the offender day after day and he sails through life as if he has done nothing wrong. He has never asked for forgiveness, and probably never will. How can I even forgive such a person? Again, releasing the person to The Father is the only way a Human can forgive such an offender. In the New Testament, there are at least two people who were forgiven in this manner, and both became converts in very dramatic ways. The first was a Roman Soldier who stood at the foot of the Cross for the whole execution of Jesus. Although he may have been one of the mockers, and certainly was involved in the execution, he found himself declaring "Surely This Was The Son of God!", after Jesus had given up His Spirit. He had not asked for forgiveness, but it was given to him anyway, because Jesus had released him to The Father.
The second person who was forgiven without asking for it was a certain Pharisee who held people's cloaks during the Stoning of Stephen. Not only did Saul assist in murdering Stephen, he then proceeded to hunt down new Believers and turn them over for prosecution and presumably, execution. Saul did not not ask for forgiveness, but felt quite self-righteous doing his dirty deeds for some time after Stephen's Martyrdom. When God finally "got his attention", Saul had not asked for forgiveness at all but was actually on his way to Damascus to persecute even more people.
There are people who have offended us deeply in life. The offenses were real and devastating, and maybe even cased permanent harm. The offenders never asked forgiveness, have moved away, or have even died. How on earth can we forgive them? The truth is, we can't in our own power. But we can follow the example of Jesus and Stephen, and reease them to The Father. With God, all things are possible!
3. Forgiving Someone Who ASKS for it: This is the easiest form of forgiveness. It nearly aways results in hugs and tears, and a deeper bond of friendship. The only snag is when the asker is not really sincere and is just trying to get off the hook. We see this a lot in law and politics. A plea-bargain or a smarmy "non-apology" is not the same as True Repentance. After going through a few of these, we soon get wise to knowing the difference. When Jesus spoke of Forgiveness, He was speaking of interpersonal relationships. He was not speaking about forgiving regimes for genocide, or evil officials for crimes against humanity. "Justice" is not "Unforgiveness", even if some would like to interpret it that way. That's why God gave us The Ten Commandments, and why The Constitution gives us guidelines on how to run a government. "Law and Order" and "Forgiveness" are not mutually exclusive.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

Psalm 103
Of David.
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live*
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The Lord works vindication
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love towards those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.
15 As for mortals, their days are like grass;
they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
obedient to his spoken word.
21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers that do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Thanks for this thoughtful walk through forgiving.
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
As I meditated on this just now, I realized there is a vital corollary: in forgiving another, complete forgiveness includes the desire for forgiveness also by God. We cannot play the false game of "I'll forgive, but You still must get him."
