John 17

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your name Over All The Earth!
Blessed Are You, King of The Universe,
And Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
How Happy we are to be called of You,
To Come into Your House With Singing and Praise,
To Exalt Your Name Together, Forever!

And You Deliver Us From Our Fears.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

At the beginning of the Passover Seder, Jeus has emptied Himself and taken the form of a servant by washing His Disciples' feet. It was a hard lesson, especially for Peter. Self-Reliance is a good thing, but not in terms of Salvation. There is no way one can earn the Grace that God extends to us. It was a hard lesson for Peter, who, according to Scripture and tradition, was an impulsive, hard-working, self-reliant man.

Jesus have resumed his role as Teacher and gets ready to lead the group in the Passover Seder. If it was the same back then as it is now, that involved almost four hours of Praying, Teaching, Questions and Answers, Blessing certain symbolic foods and wine, and singing the Hallel, which were the Psalms of Praise. Jesus opens the evening with Prayer, and what a prayer it is!

John is the only Evangelist who included these words in his Gospel, and I still remember the first time I read them over 40 years ago. I was so inspired, I had to read the whole chapter again.

Jesus starts by glorifying the Father, and rejoicing in His Plan. By stating that God's Will is being accomplished, Jesus is starting His prayer the same way that we are taught:

"Our Father Who art in Heaven", is equivalent to: “Father, the hour has come."

"Hallowed Be Thy Name"" is implied in: "Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you."

In order for Jesus to be "Glorified", He will be submitting Himself to a torturous Death on The Cross. Without Death, there is no Ressurection. Without Good Friday, there is no Easter. This is "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven." Jesus continues: "4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began."

This is a sort of "preamble" to the rest of this awesome prayer, which we will continue to explore tomorrow.
