Luke 18

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”

6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

"YOU HAVE DEFINITELY WON A TRIP TO JAMAICA!!!
(Some Restrictions apply, Accomadations only.)))

I could hardly believe my eyes!I had always wanted to go to Jamaica, and I was immersed in the Reggae Music that was starting to hit our shores. My songwriting and playing were starting to reflect the rhythm and feel of the Islands, and now I was going to be able to experience it for myself! Woo Hoo!

So I bought the few pieces of junk jewelry that were required to claim my prize, renewed my passport and waited for my prize to arrive.

When I didn't hear anything for a month, I did some research and found a number I could call. I got some very evasive people who kept making more demands that I purchase more jewelry before I could get my trip. "Absolutely NOT!!" I said. I had fulfilled all the requirements and wanted my trip to Jamaica! Back and Forth we went, on and on. I threatened a class action lawsuit, as the same mail went out to thousands of people. Nobody had ever actually claimed the prize because it was just junk mail!

Fianlly, after months of threats and negotiations, I received two vouchers for accomadations for a week at a small hotel in Montego Bay. I booked the flight, and we went.

The cab driver who took us from the airport to the hotel was surprised at our "choice". He said that it was a Jamaican-owned hotel that catered to local people, which meant that we would be the only people of the Caucasian Persuasion staying there. But I was just happy because it would be more "authentic"

The hotel was small, but clean, and had a restaurant attached. In back was a wonderful tropical garden that was tended by an elderly Jamaican Man, who told me all the places we could go to hear the best Reggae Music. We did all the touristy stuff, but also went to some excellent concerts. I ended up singing Bob Marley songs with the raftmen on the Rio Grande as we rowed up to an all-night Reggae concert (All Old-Skool, Authentic Reggae) and for some crazy reason, we fit right in. (This was back in the Twentieth Century. I don't know how things are there right now.) Anyway, that's today's little story. What on earth could it relate to Today's Scripture?

Jesus tells a story of a widow who has an adversary who is oppressing her. The judge who can help her can't be bothered with her. He has no fear of God or man. Nevertheless, the widow keeps at it, demanding justice. The judge's JOB is to provide justice for even the most humble of his constituants, yet he continues to ignore her. Rather than give up, she continues to "claim her prize" until finally, the judge gives in, not because he cares about justice for the widow, but just to get her off his back.

Then, Jesus gives us the punch-line. The judge is evil, but eventually gives in to the widow's persistence. God, on the other hand, is GOOD. How much more will HE respond to our persistent prayers?

Never give up! You may just get a trip to Paradise!
