Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
Luke 11
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer
11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[a]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.[b]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[c]
And lead us not into temptation.[d]’”
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Psalm 72
Of Solomon.
1 Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to a king’s son.
2 May he judge your people with righteousness,
and your poor with justice.
3 May the mountains yield prosperity for the people,
and the hills, in righteousness.
4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the needy,
and crush the oppressor.
5 May he live* while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.
6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth.
7 In his days may righteousness flourish
and peace abound, until the moon is no more.
8 May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
9 May his foes* bow down before him,
and his enemies lick the dust.
10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles
render him tribute,
may the kings of Sheba and Seba
bring gifts.
11 May all kings fall down before him,
all nations give him service.
12 For he delivers the needy when they call,
the poor and those who have no helper.
13 He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life;
and precious is their blood in his sight.
15 Long may he live!
May gold of Sheba be given to him.
May prayer be made for him continually,
and blessings invoked for him all day long.
16 May there be abundance of grain in the land;
may it wave on the tops of the mountains;
may its fruit be like Lebanon;
and may people blossom in the cities
like the grass of the field.
17 May his name endure for ever,
his fame continue as long as the sun.
May all nations be blessed in him;*
may they pronounce him happy.
18 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
19 Blessed be his glorious name for ever;
may his glory fill the whole earth.Amen and Amen.
20 The prayers of David son of Jesse are ended.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
In the Showtime series The Tudors, Henry VIII is plunged into a deep depression by the death of his (third!) wife, Jane Seymour. The king wallows in self-pity and secludes himself with his Bibles and Prayerbooks, and finally emerges with an addition to The Lord's Prayer. (For Thine is the Kingdom, etc). The clergy are aghast. How can anyone add anything to The Lord's Prayer?
Similar outrage occurred right here on Free Republic when Pope Francis changed some of the words in the "Our Father" prayer. (How DARE he?)
Of course, neither Henry VIII nor Pope Francis were sitting at Jesus' feet listening to the Hebrew or Aramaic words of the prayer. They were reading it in their own vernacular, in Latin, or at best, the original Greek Text of the Gospel of Matthew. Not only that, there is a whole different version of the Prayer in Luke, so which one is the right one?
(Just a note, I am not mocking Henry VIII or Pope Francis, or even those who love the traditional way of saying The Lord's Prayer. I love saying it too!)
People who like to point out what they consider "inconsistencies" in the Bible will often point to this Passage in Luke and compare it to the version in Matthew. They point out the differences in The Lord's Prayer and say that this is proof that the Bible is just a collection of writings by people who didn't agree with one another.
They just don't get it! First of all, these are two different events. The prayer in Matthew was taught in the Sermon on the Mount, in front of hundreds of people. The Luke prayer was taught in a private meeting with Jesus' disciples.
Jesus was not teaching a literary Prayer that could be pasted into a prayer-book. He was teaching a way of addressing our Heavenly Father in prayer, which is a whole different thing. In essence, He gave His followers a pattern of prayer, and guidance on how to pray. This is a perfect answer to the disciples' requent. They said "Teach us how to pray" not "Teach us some prayers."
Looking at the two versions, we do see the pattern, First, we address the Father, and Praise his Holy Name. That is entering His Courts with Praise. Then we express agreement with Him, as he is right about everything all the time, no matter what (Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done). Then there is Confession, Forgiveness of Others, Petition, and a prayer for Protection against evil. Depending on what's going on in your life, you may want to expand on any of these elements, starting, of course, with Praise and Worship. This is not just a formula, but an agreement with God that He is Who He Is, The Great I AM, our Father in Heaven, and the Almighty. Yet, he Loves us and reaches out to us by giving us this framework for our Prayer Life with Him.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
