They are one in the same.
Don’t forget that Hitlery claimed that Mary and Joseph were homeless.
I just noticed something recently, that I had somehow previously missed. Joseph basically disappears from the bible after Jesus’s birth. I have no idea how I had missed this before.
Traditional Catholic Theology teaches both that Mary was sinless and that Mary needs a Saviour.
Anyone who is taught only one of the two points is receiving defective instruction.
They were in Bethlehem for a census for taxes. Tax collectors were hated then as now.
And if Mary was born sinless then her mother had to be as well and her mother and her mother ad infinitum.
You are well named. There is plenty of body of thought on the subject that spans the recent 2,000 years. Lean not unto your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) and learn...
This post indicates that the author may have been raised a Catholic, but he didn’t understand the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Mary was given the grace of being born without original sin so she could be a worthy mother to our Lord. This Grace was given in anticipation of the saving act of the Sacrifice on the Cross. Her prayer after the Annunciation, the Magnificat, specifically pronounces this in the beginning:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Read the second chapter of Luke concerning the episode of Jesus worrying his parents because he was missing in the temple.
So it contradicts itseslf.
The last mention of Joseph in any of the gospels is when Jesus was still a boy and they realize he’s missing when they are heading home from Jerusalem (he’s discussing Scripture and theology with the rabbis back in Jerusalem). The traditional assumption is that he passed away before Jesus began his 3 year ministry as he is never mentioned again.
I respect your beliefs and understand your reasoning. However, I must respectfully disagree and witness to the fact that Mary, Christ’s mother is the ever perfect, ever virgin Mother of God. She is the Immaculate Conception. Through God’s Grace, she was conceived without sin. As the new Eve and Ark of the Covenant, she bore the perfect Christ in her perfect Womb.
She is utterly unique in history. The perfect does not come from the flawed.
You are free to disagree or malign what I believe and hold dear and true. But, I am posting this comment not to argue, but in witness.
Weird, huh. Joseph dropped completely out of sight, so it has been presumed since forever that he died in there somewhere.
And then some wealthy man -- a just man named Joseph -- appeared seemingly outta nowhere with enough clout to claim Jesus' body and bury it in his own new tomb.
It's a famous account that few would recognize. Something about a great deliverance..
Merry Christmas!
Luke Chapter 2: Joseph was present when the Lord Jesus was 12. Referred to not by name but as His parents.
No, it explains how two things that are not of themselves contradictory are not contradictory.
So you are saying that Jesus was born in sin?
Awhile back I was reading a commentary on the Book of Matthew. I found the commentary to be of value, but I stopped reading about halfway through. And that was because the author started taking all sorts of swipes at the Catholic Church (I am not Catholic, by the way).
I saw those swipes as more than unnecessary. They were, in my opinion, divisive. The author should have just made his point, and then let the reader decide for himself. There was no need to state, “And here’s where the Catholic Church is wrong”, over and over again.
Just my two cents.
The reason Jesus had to be born of a virgin is because he would have inherited Adam’s sin if he had a biological father. Somehow Mary was able to be without the taint of original sin with a biological father but Jesus was not if we believe Catholic theology.
Her prayer pronounces that she was without sin?
BTW, the Immaculate Conception is a fairly recent addition to Catholic doctrine.
Mary was FULL of Grace, and that enabled her to live a sinless life. If a blind man falls into a pit that he could not see, one could save him after the fact with a rope or ladder; but he could have been saved before the fact by being told of the pit in front of him. That is what the total INFUSION OF GRACE did for Mary; the Angel of the Annunciation even addressed her thus.
