Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 6

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10  your kingdom come,
your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.
11  Give us today our daily bread.
12  And forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13  And lead us not into temptation,[a]
    but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Fasting

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Years had gone by since I had last cut my hair, and it was so long that I could almost sit on it. Although I had devised a method of keeping it under control while riding (The Biker Braid), I was waking up in the morning with a lot of snarls and tangles. In order to prevent that, I braided my hair into two long side braids, Indian-Style, and that seemed to solve the problem for a while. However, as my hair grew longer, the braids did too, and one night I had a nightmare that woke me up to find the braids wrapped oround my neck! OK. That was it. Time to cut my hair!

My long hair, though, had become a source of pride. It was really the only "glamorous" part of me left, as I have grown older, overweight, and less active. I spent a lot of time brushing, styling, braiding, etc, and so my hair was also an "activity" for me. But it HAD to be done. And so, as my first activity out of voluntary self-quarantine, I went to the salon.

I had heard of a famous charity that used donated hair to make wigs for children who had lost their hair due to chemotherapy. The Hairstylist told me that the famous "charity" charged the parents for the wigs that they had made with donated hair. I didn't like that idea at all. However, she explained, we could send the hair to a lady in another state, who makes the wigs by hand herself and then gives them to the children. That was great! Get out your scissors!

And so, the stylist gently combed my hair into several sections. Then, she braided each portion individually, making sure each one was the same length (over 20 inches!) Then she snipped each braid and laid it on the couter before me. I lined them up and took a picture with my flip phone, and then they were packaged and sent to the Wig-Lady. As the Stylist was touching up my roots and giving me a final trim, I told her the O'Henry Story The Gift of the Magi. Of course, being a product of the modern school system, the stylist had never heard of the classic American Short Story.

The difference between the two Wig-Makers is illustrated in the Sermon on the Mount. After teaching The Lord's Prayer, Jesus talks about fasting. One person advertises his fast, to show the world how pious he is. The other fasts in secret, and makes sure he is presenting a smile to the world so that nobody knows that he is hungry. The fast is supposed to be between the person and God.

Everybody knows the name of the charity that sells the wigs, and I have even seen TV commercials for them. On the other hand, I still don't know the name of the Out-of-State Wig Lady, and that is probably the way she wants it to be.

My son and daughter won’t donate to the alleged charity that charges for their wigs any more either. They were both peeved that they charge for them from freely donated hair.

Yes, my son grew his hair out. He has a gorgeous head of thick hair that any woman would be jealous of (like his sisters, LOL although their hair is nothing to sneeze at either.) The long hair actually worked fairly well on him.

I have no problem with charging for work done. It’s free enterprise and the American way.

However, don’t make out that it’s a “Charity”.

Ask Ananias and Sapphira! The issue wasn’t that they kept back some of the money realized from the sale of their land. That was theirs to do whatever they wished.

No, the sin was conspiring to lie and make it look as though they were giving all.
