Daniel 10

Daniel’s Vision of a Man

10 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.[a] The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.

2 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.

4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5 I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.

7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.

10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”

15 While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. 16 Then one who looked like a man[b] touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.”

18 Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19 “Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,” he said. “Peace! Be strong now; be strong.”

When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.”

20 So he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21 but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.

We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

A Song of Ascents.

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,*
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.

4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
5 May those who sow in tears
reap with shouts of joy.

bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
carrying their sheaves.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The (hyopothetical) pastor shook his head in weariness.

"I don't understand it," he moaned. "We do all the right things. We have awesome music, lots of new members, a beautiful building, and we are operating in the black. So why do I feel that we are missing something?"

Sorry, sir, the Holy Spirit is not dependent upon YOU doing all the right things. There are forces at work that are far beyond your understanding. Daniel found this out as he struggled in prayer through fasting and humbling himself. Why wasn't he getting an answer?

So far, the Book of Daniel has been very instructive about Prayer. It could be a stand-alone study on this subject. From the very first chapter we have seen how Daniel has epitomized prayer for us, as a Faithful Witness, in praying for wisdom, in refusing to worship idols, in confession of sin, in intercession, and in being faithful to pray in the face of persecution. Now we see another side of prayer, that of waiting on the Lord.

Sometimes we pray and pray, and do all the right things, only to be frustrated by the seeming indifference of God. Daniel fasted (a good thing!), humbled himself (also excellent!) and prayed (a perfectly wonderful thing to do) and the heavens seemed to be brass. Suddenly, an Angel appears to him and lets Daniel in on a secret that rattles the very foundation of his belief system. The secret is that there is a whole other dimension of life that we can't see, and it is the realm of Spiritual Warfare. The Angel says that God heard Daniel's Prayer the first day he prayed it, but, due to the Spiritual Warfare that is ongoing, the answer was delayed. The Angel even names his Champion, Michael the Archangel. (As you may have seen on the Bible Art Thread, Michael is a very popular subject for the Arts, both Classical and Modern.) Then, the Angel begins to answer Daniel's questions with a prophey so cryptic and frightening that Daniel might have wished he hadn't prayed for it!

Now, if you are a believer, as I am, you take as Truth that God is Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent. We also believe that angels and demons are both created beings, and therefore unable to really hinder the Almighty. So why doesn't God just give these evil ones a huge Cosmic ZOT and rid the world of them? Then, everything would be nice, right?

I submit to you that it would not be so "nice" at all. Even now, many of us chafe at the "Nanny State", forcing us to comply with every mandate, every safety regulation, stifling every "offensive" thought or word, every "double-plus-ungood' gesture. Goodness and Safety forced from the top down stunts our development as humans. If a baby chick doesn't have to struggle to break open his egg, he may not survive. If life is TOO easy, we don't grow. I may even go so far as to posit that The Greatest Generation was prepared for WW2 by The Great Depression. Daniel was prepared for his Great Apocalyptic Vision by struggling through what seemed like unanswered prayer.

And so, the next time you pray, be assured that God hears your prayer the exact nanosecond that you think it. He knows exactly how and when your prayer needs to be answered, in order for it to be "Just Right". And if it takes a war in the heavenly realm to do that, well so be it.

Imagine if Daniel had given up. We wouldn't have one of the most awesome Books in the Old Testament if he had. So Daniel's prayer life affects both you and me...even in our present day.
