Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah’s Prayer

1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:

In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”

4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said:

“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. 11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.”

I was cupbearer to the king.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven
Blessed Be Your Holy Name Forever!
How We Long For Your Kingdom,
As we struggle under the yoke of oppression
From the World, The Flesh, And the enemy of our souls.
We Ache For The Day When You Will Reign
King of Kings,
and Lord of Lords.
And Your Will Be Done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Let all that has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

God Bless America.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

My little sister was given a $100.00 Gift Certificate to the fanciest French Restaurant in Downtown Boston. I warned her that this would barely cover the Appetizer, but, off she went with her hubby for an Adventure in Haute Cuisine.

The Somalier (Wine Steward) approached the table. With a French Accent reminiscent of Inspector Cleauseau, he intoned:

"Wood Madamme weesh to loook at ze Wine Leest?"

My sister replied that she would like a glass of the House Pinot Grigio. The Somalier looked aghast.

"Madamme. Pinot Grigio eez an EEE-TALian Wine. Zees Ees a FRENCH Restaurant!"

Sis looked him straight in the eye and said:

WELL, LA-DI-FREAKIN' DAH!!!!!

At that, the Somalier's facade crumbled as he "lost it" completely. He was not even French, but was a student at Northeastern University on the Work-Study program.

Sis got a glass of the House Chardonnay, which is pretty close to a Pinot Grigio.

Even in Captivity, it would seem tht Nehemiah had a cushy job. He was "Cupbearer To The King' which would seem to be the office of "Somalier" or "Wine Steward". You know, those guys in the fancy restaurants who have the napkin over their arm and the keys to the wine cellar, who present the label, pour the wine, make recommendations, and patiently wait for their customer's approval. It is a time-honored and exalted position. The King of Persia had his own personal Somalier, who, although technically a slave, was a trusted confidant. There was an added responsibility to Nehemiah's job. Since assassination was a constant threat, Nehemiah was also the Wine-TASTER as well as the Wine-Bearer. That made his relationship with the King even more intimate and essential. Nehemiah actually risked his life many times a day in service to his master.

Surrounded by all the Luxury, Pomp, and Intrigue, Nehemiah could have easily forgotten his homeland. Yet, when a brother tells him about the miserable state of his city, he is devastated. What can he do? He has a responsible and respected position as the King's Cupbeared, and it's too big a job for one man anyway.

Nehemiah does the right thing before even asking the King for permission to set out for Jerusalem. He PRAYS. The Holy Spirit has graciously pulled back the curtain and allows us to read this man's Prayer for his Nation. It is a model of Praise, Contrition, Confession, and Petition. He askes for Wisdom, and a Favorable Reaction from the King.

We are enjoined to pray for our country, for those in authority, and for righteousness to rule. Nehemiah's Prayer is a good place to start.

Like Nehemiah, we are to approach God with sincerity of heart and transparency. That means: no phoney accents, no canned speeches, and no pretending we are something we are not.

PS. The Tab exceeded the Gift Certificate. But it was a lovely evening and gave our family another great story!Sacre Bleu!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 74

A Maskil of Asaph.

1 O God, why do you cast us off for ever?
Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?
2 Remember your congregation, which you acquired long ago,
which you redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage.
Remember Mount Zion, where you came to dwell.
3 Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary.

4 Your foes have roared within your holy place;
they set up their emblems there.
5 At the upper entrance they hacked
the wooden trellis with axes.*
6 And then, with hatchets and hammers,
they smashed all its carved work.
7 They set your sanctuary on fire;
they desecrated the dwelling-place of your name,
bringing it to the ground.
8 They said to themselves, ‘We will utterly subdue them’;
they burned all the meeting-places of God in the land.

9 We do not see our emblems;
there is no longer any prophet,
and there is no one among us who knows how long.
10 How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?
Is the enemy to revile your name for ever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand;
why do you keep your hand in* your bosom?

12 Yet God my King is from of old,
working salvation in the earth.
13 You divided the sea by your might;
you broke the heads of the dragons in the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you gave him as food* for the creatures of the wilderness.
15 You cut openings for springs and torrents;
you dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;
you established the luminaries* and the sun.
17 You have fixed all the bounds of the earth;
you made summer and winter.

18 Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs,
and an impious people reviles your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild animals;
do not forget the life of your poor for ever.

20 Have regard for your* covenant,
for the dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.
21 Do not let the downtrodden be put to shame;
let the poor and needy praise your name.
22 Rise up, O God, plead your cause;
remember how the impious scoff at you all day long.
23 Do not forget the clamour of your foes,
the uproar of your adversaries that goes up continually.
