Matthew 6

Fasting

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

I have told this story before, but there is an "update" at the end. It is very relevant to our study of Prayer in The Bible.

About 40 years ago, Mom was invited to the wedding of my cousin. The ceremony took place in the catering hall because the bride and groom hailed from two different denominations, and so this was to accommodate both families. After a brief ceremony, the guests headed over to the banqueting tables and were promptly served a delicious-looking fruit cup topped with a generous scoop of pistachio sherbet. Mmmm mmmm mmm...it looked SO good. The Groom's Father was to say grace and then all would dig in.

The Groom's father stood up and began to pray. And Pray, and Pray. He went on and on, and seemed to reiterate every blow of The Passion of The Christ (long before Mel Gibson ever did!) and went into great detail about Blood and Wounds, Suffering, Death, and Hellfire. The guests, standing in respect, and too embarrassed to say anything, watched their Pistachio Sherbet melt into a gooey green soup in the crystal dishes, and still the Groom's father droned on and on. Whn the Prayer finally ended, the waitresses removed the uneaten fruit cup from the table and served the salad. It became the ONLY thing Mom remembered about the wedding for years to come, and it soured her to the Evangelical Message..

Here is an update. I dined with my cousin and her husband years later, and I asked him how his family were doing. He replied that, since he stopped going to his parent's church, they have "shunned" him and are convinced that he and his wife are going to hell. I finally asked WHAT church that was, and he replied that it was a known "Christian" Cult that had its origins in China. I recognized it immediately, and wished that I had known that 40 years ago, so that I could have explained that inappropriate "prayer" to my Mom.

In The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks about people who use Prayer, Fasting, and Charitable Giving as a Trumpet Sound announcing their own Righteousness and Spirituality. In our own modern time, we have a name for this behavior. It's called "Virtue-Signaling", and, if we go by the words of Jesus, it is a SIN.

Reminds me of how my youngest was soured on Christianity because of a couple of people of relatives. I try hard to be a good example. But the scars are stubborn. Prayers daily on that.
