Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 6

Giving to the Needy

6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10  your kingdom come,
your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.
11  Give us today our daily bread.
12  And forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13  And lead us not into temptation,[a]
    but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

We Thank You, Father, For Your Holy Word,
Which You have allowed to be preserved through Your People,

How Wonderful You Are,
How Holy and Righteous and Just in Your Judgments!

of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

"ML, could you drive me to the craft store? I'm in the middle of a painting and I ran out of Titanium White."

"No Problem, Sis! I have two big brand new tubes of Titanium White that I got on sale. You can have one of them. But I'd still like to go to the Craft Store. I'll pick you up in an hour."

I threw the tube in my car and went back inside to finish Saturday's Thread. Then I walked and fed the dog, cleaned up the breakfast things, did my Bible Study, and looked up at the clock. EEK! An hour had passed, and I promised I would pick up my sister and her (disabled) husband and go to the craft store. I grabbed my purse and ran out to the car.

It had rained during the night, covering my car with wet leaves. The door handle was wet and dirty, and so, as I put the key in the ignition and started up the car, I grabbed the bottle of hand sanitizer (standard vehicle equipment in the days of COVID) and cleaned my hands. Still multi-tasking backing out of the driveway, I grabbed the tube of moisturizer to alleviete the chapping that Hand Sanitizer invariably produces. I was just about to sqeeze a generous amount of moisturizer onto my hands...but it didn't smell right. I stopped the car and looked at the tube.

It was a Brand New 4 OZ Tube of Titanium White Acrylic Paint. YIKES!

We have been studying "Prayer in the Bible" for many weeks now. We have read the prayers of the Patriarchs and Prophets, Shepherds and Kings, Leaders and Followers. Some of the Prayers, like Psalms, are in the form of Poetry that we can memorize and recite, and some are simple cries of the heart. And yet, we all want our prayers to "smell right". In fact, the Bible describes the prayers of the Saints (Believers) as a "Sweet Aroma". From my story, you can see that it's easy to mistake a counterfeit from the real thing. Both the Titanium White and the Hand Cream came in 4 OZ Vinyl tubes with a one inch screw cap. Both substances were pure white, had the same texture, and came out of the tube the same way. Disaster was averted when my nose detected the difference. I had a moment of sheer horror when I visualized white acrylic paint all over my hands, my car, my steering wheel, and everything else. The same can be said for Prayer. A prayer that is merely recited because we know it by heart, or a prayer that is said to "show off" to others how "Spiritual" one is, does not have a "sweet aroma" to God. Jesus expounds upon this in The Sermon on the Mount. He also gives us an outline for prayer, which we now call "The Lord's Prayer", or "The Our Father". It's OK to say this prayer as written, but one has to mean it. If it is recited just to open or close a meeting, to entertain others, or to demonstrate one's spirituality, it is not a prayer at all. When used that way, The Lord's Prayer is just a lot of white paint that doesn't smell right.

After I was born again and got churched, I was astonished at conversational group prayer. Pray-ers were so authentic! I could talk from my heart to my new Lord!

So I ask Him now for peace for Jerusalem--I haven't been there yet, and I want it still to be standing so I can visit during the Millennium. How's that for selfish?
