Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Isaiah 37

Hezekiah’s Prayer

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: 16 “Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17 Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.

18 “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands. 19 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 20 Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are the only God.[a]”

Our Father in Heaven,

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The book of Isaiah has more in it than just Prophecy. It also contains Isaiah's personal prayers, some Narrative, and even the prayers of others. Today we look at a prayer of King Hezekiah.

Hezekiah was one of the few good kings of Judah. One would hope that would have been enough to keep the "bad guys" away. However, Ancient Empires like Assyria and Babylon were flexing their muscles and conquering vast territories of the Ancient World. Although they did not have Weapons of Mass Destruction, they had a devestating Doomsday Weapon which is still used today. It is called "Psyops", or "Psychological Warfare".

The comic image of the Medieval Frenchman taunting King Arthur from the castle wall (Monte Python) is based on reality. There is a scene in the Bible where the enemy commander is shouting up to the walls of Jerusalem, in Hebrew, so that all the soldiers will be demoralized by his speech. The general tone of the taunt was that if other people's gods didn't protect them, why should the God of Israel be any different?

King Hezekiah had received a letter with a similar threat. His situation looked dire. All the "experts" would probably agree with the letter, as the enemy was camped right outside the wall, and all the neighboring countries had been conquered already. Wouldn't it be easier and safer just to negotiate to attain "Peace in Our Time"?

However, Hezekiah knew that HIS God is the REAL God, and he took the letter into the temple and laid it down before God. The next day, the enemy got some "Psyops" of their own. By a miraculous event, they panicked and fled.

"Psyops" uses the weapon of FEAR. Fear is doubt magnified. Sennecherib, the enemy commander, tried to induce fear by planting seeds of doubt. King Hezekiah responded in a timeless way...he went to God FIRST. He didn't allow fear to fester by going to "experts', trying to negotiate with evil, or even keeping it to himself. Things aren't much different today. We have seen how powerful people, or even a successful Superpower, can be destroyed by Fear.
