Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Proverbs 30

Sayings of Agur

30 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.

This man’s utterance to Ithiel:
“I am weary, God,
    but I can prevail.[a]

2  Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
    I do not have human understanding.

3  I have not learned wisdom,
    nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.

4  Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
    Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
    Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
    Surely you know!

5  “Every word of God is flawless;
    he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

6  Do not add to his words,
    or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

7  “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
    do not refuse me before I die:

8  Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
    give me neither poverty nor riches,
    but give me only my daily bread.

9  Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
    and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
    and so dishonor the name of my God.

10  “Do not slander a servant to their master,
    or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.

11  “There are those who curse their fathers
    and do not bless their mothers;

12  those who are pure in their own eyes
    and yet are not cleansed of their filth;

13  those whose eyes are ever so haughty,
    whose glances are so disdainful;

14  those whose teeth are swords
    and whose jaws are set with knives
to devour the poor from the earth
    and the needy from among mankind.

15  “The leech has two daughters.
    ‘Give! Give!’ they cry.
“There are three things that are never satisfied,
    four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

16  the grave, the barren womb,
    land, which is never satisfied with water,
    and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’

17  “The eye that mocks a father,
    that scorns an aged mother,
will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,
    will be eaten by the vultures.

18  “There are three things that are too amazing for me,
    four that I do not understand:

19  the way of an eagle in the sky,
    the way of a snake on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
    and the way of a man with a young woman.

20  “This is the way of an adulterous woman:
    She eats and wipes her mouth
    and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’

21  “Under three things the earth trembles,
    under four it cannot bear up:

22  a servant who becomes king,
    a godless fool who gets plenty to eat,

23  a contemptible woman who gets married,
    and a servant who displaces her mistress.

24  “Four things on earth are small,
    yet they are extremely wise:

25  Ants are creatures of little strength,
    yet they store up their food in the summer;

26  hyraxes are creatures of little power,
    yet they make their home in the crags;

27  locusts have no king,
    yet they advance together in ranks;

28  a lizard can be caught with the hand,
    yet it is found in kings’ palaces.

29  “There are three things that are stately in their stride,
    four that move with stately bearing:

30  a lion, mighty among beasts,
    who retreats before nothing;

31  a strutting rooster, a he-goat,
    and a king secure against revolt.[b]

32  “If you play the fool and exalt yourself,
    or if you plan evil,
    clap your hand over your mouth!

33  For as churning cream produces butter,
    and as twisting the nose produces blood,
    so stirring up anger produces strife.”

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Most Holy Name!
We Come Into Your Presence With Singing,
And Into Your Courts With Praise!
You Alone Are Worthy to be Worshiped,
For Your Alone Are The One True God.
King of Kings,
Lord of Lords,
You Are the Almighty,
The GREAT I AM,
The Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days.
Let All That Is Within Me Bless Your Holy Name!

Thank You, Father for this Wise and Poetic
Chapter of Proverbs from Agur the Son of Jakeh.
Agur has a different style than Solomon,
Yet we perceive Your Inspiration in this Interesting Passage!
Thank You for these lovely metaphors from Nature,
That teach us Your precepts day by day.
Little things like ants, lizards and spiders,
Big and noble creatures like Eagles, Lions and Greyhounds
And even the feeble rock badgers have a lesson to share
from Your Boundless Creation!

LORD, We ask that You fill the leaders of the USA with Your Spirit,
that they may make Holy and Righteous decisions.

Bring the Truth To Light, Abba Father,
And expose all the Liars!

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Let all that has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Today is Penny-The-Dog's 11th Birthday. According to the old adage (but not necessarily modern veterinary reckoning), that makes Penny 77 in Dog Years. She is grey around her muzzle and gets special treats for her achy joints. Next month I will be 69, and, if I didn't color my hair, I would be as grey as Penny. My joints hurt too. But we still have our walks together and we look out for each other.

Once again, God's timing of this thread lines up perfectly. The 30th Chapter of Proverbs is not by Solomon, but of a person named "Agur, Son of Jakeh". Nobody knows exactly who this sage was, but the Scripture calls his sayings "Inspired", and so, Amen.

Agur's words extol the wonders and beauty of Nature, and admits his own inadequacy of understanding God's Ways. Even such lowley creatures as lizards, spiders, rock badgers and ants leave him fascinated. His sense of awe culminates in the Mystery of the Love between a Man and a Woman, which exceeds the mere process of reproduction common to all life. No...there's something MORE there, and it fills Agur with Wonder.

Agur also cites what is perhaps the only positive reference to a dog in the entire Bible. He speaks of the Greyhound. Now, in both states where I have lived, there have been active Greyhound Rescue Organizations. Once retired from racing these Greyhounds would not have a home unless they were adopted by people. Since they were raised all on one level, these older dogs often need to be taught how to climb stairs for the first time. I have heard that they make wonderful pets, once they have adjusted to a new home.

Penny comes from a different type of rescue situation. As you can see from the photo above, she is an American Staffordshire Terrier, also known as a pit-bull. She's wonderful with people, but not friendly to other dogs. It has been my responsibility to never put her in a situation where she could get herself in trouble.

Agur worships the Creator, not His creation. he tells us not to add to the Word of God, or take anything away from it. Nevertheless, it is a lovely thing to respond to God's Creation with Awe and Wonder, and be Good Stewards of His Gifts.
