Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 129

A song of ascents.

1  “They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,”
    let Israel say;

2  “they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
    but they have not gained the victory over me.

3  Plowmen have plowed my back
    and made their furrows long.

4  But the Lord is righteous;
    he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.”

5  May all who hate Zion
    be turned back in shame.

6  May they be like grass on the roof,
    which withers before it can grow;

7  a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,
    nor one who gathers fill his arms.

8  May those who pass by not say to them,
    “The blessing of the Lord be on you;

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Wonderful and Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
You Are The King of The Universe,
The Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer of Worlds,
Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent!
Creator of Everything There Is,
And You Hold All Of Us In The Palm Of Your Hand.

1. “Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth,”
Let Israel now say—

Yet they have not prevailed against me.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

My beloved Mom(RIP) had a weird habit of correcting my grammar in front of people. Most of the time she was correct, but sometimes words and usage change over the years. It was in those rare moments that I was able to "defend myself", but Mom was usually justified. That didn't make it any less annoying!

Anyway, of her four daughters and two sons, we have Three Songwriters, a Journalist, a Medical Secretary, and two men who founded and succeeded at their own businesses. All six of us have no problem expressing ourselves. Perhaps that was the purpose of the Grammar-Police Stuff. If it was, Mom did the right thing.

When Mom read a book or newspaper article, she would find all the grammatical errors and correct them. She loved to read, and passed this love onto all her children. Once I was reading a book that I had bought at Goodwill, and there was a pencil-written correction in the margin. I don't know if it was Mom's, but it brought back memories of her.

I find myself mentally correcting the grammar more and more. It is as if there are no proof-readers anymore. The worst example is the word we use to describe somebody arising from their sleep.

The word is wake. It is often followed by the word up, as in I wake up, I woke up, etc. It gets gets trickier in the perfect tense. The one I see very frequently is "I had woken up." It may be proper usage but it just seems awkward to me. In such a situation, I would write I had awakened. This also works in the passive voice such as "I was awakened by the singing of birds" rather then "I was woken up by the singing of birds." Maybe I'm a little old-fashioned, but, to me, it just sounds better.

The word "woke" has come to mean something else in our new society. Like much of "NEWSPEAK" (See Orwell's "1984") this word no longer means what it used to mean. Just like the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" has taken on a new meaning since the Jonestown tragedy, "Woke" has come to mean blindly following a left-wing agenda and accepting everything it espouses no matter how absurd. In my own discourse, it has been easy to substitute "awakened" for "woke" because it has been my habit for a long time.
