A community of Benedictine monks has vowed to continue ministering at a Spanish civil war memorial marked by a 460-foot cross despite a bill pending in parliament that would ban expressions of support for General Francisco Franco's 20th-century dictatorship.

The Benedictines have long overseen the site, located in the Valley of the Fallen near Madrid.

Spain's socialist-led government's cabinet on July 20 approved a final draft of the bill, called the Democratic Memory Law. The measure would redesignate the valley as a "place of democratic memory" and require the removal of fixtures deemed to extol Franco, who portrayed himself as a fervent Catholic.

"Although this draft law provides for the extinction of our foundation, the text says nothing about our community's disappearance," Father Santiago Cantera Montenegro, prior of the Valley of the Fallen, said after the cabinet's action.

"So we'll continue our life tranquilly and normally, knowing God and our heavenly mother are watching over us," he said.

In a July 22 letter to fellow monks, Father Cantera said Spanish media had spread "disturbing news" about the bill, reported the online Spanish language news site Religion Digital. He added that he hoped the Benedictine order could continue running its hostel and music school at the site

The Left wanted another Soviet satellite, and our communists traitors in the State Department, including Hiss, must have been horrified.

That he did. Franco was no saint. But his communist opponents were even worse. And Franco was one of the few people to outmaneuver Hitler. Hitler allegedly said after a conference with Franco: “I’d rather have three or four teeth pulled than go through another meeting with him.”

You deal with Communists like they would deal with you in the same circumstances. Any other policy is suicide.

The same dealing attitude the Republicans can’t seem to do with Democrats. Shameful

During early part of WWII a German Panzer division surrounded the monastery that made B and B and drained the stock.

Franco played Hitler. He kept fudging on joining the war. He knew most Spaniards didn’t support the war aims and Spain could not afford participation. Yet there was a danger Hitler could attack him or force him.

Hitler’s chief of intelligence (Wilhelm Canaris) privately warned Franco that Germany would probably lose the war. And so Spain should not throw in with Hitler.

Franco wisely took that advice.
