Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 119

113  I hate double-minded people,
    but I love your law.

114  You are my refuge and my shield;
    I have put my hope in your word.

115  Away from me, you evildoers,
    that I may keep the commands of my God!

116  Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live;
    do not let my hopes be dashed.

117  Uphold me, and I will be delivered;
    I will always have regard for your decrees.

Savior and Shield!
Save Me, Father, For Your are My Hiding Place, my

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

One of the things I never see children do these days is play Jump Rope. I remember it fondly, even though I wasn't very good at it. It was mostly a girl's game, but it involved at least three kids, one on each end and one in the middle. Gym Equipment consisted of a piece of clothesline (there's something ELSE you don't see much anymore!), and there were dozens of strange, silly chants that everybody knew that kept the rhythm. Most of these were total nonsense, but they kept the beat. I am reminded of this one:

"Roses Are Red,
Violets Are Blue,
I'm Schizophrenic,
And I Am Too."

Back in those "unenlightened times, Schizophrenia was called "Split Personality". Now that particular affliction is called "Multiple Personality Disorder" and "Schizophrenia" is something totally different. But hey, we thought we were being oh-so clever!

Today's Reading starts out with "I hate Double-Minded people". The Psalmist is not talking about Schizophrenia or even Multiple-Personality Disorder. He is speaking of people who say one thing and do another, of people who set high standards for OTHERS, but not for themselves, and people who lie and cheat. In other words, Hypocrites! This very important word comes from the Greek word for Actor. In Ancient Greece, actors wore masks on stage so that the people in the cheap seats could see their characters. And so, a hypocrite is one person behind the mask, and another person on display. Unable to be who they really are, they are "double minded".

Samekh is Shaped Like a Shield.

In Cursive Script, it is just a circle, looking even More like a Shield than The Familiar Printed Letter.
It is the 15th letter of the Hebrew Alphabet, and its Numerical Value is 60.

Its Meaning is to Shield, Shelter, Support, Uphold, and the Opposite: To Lean Upon, To Depend and Rely Upon It is the Symbol of "Semikhah", The Laying on of Hands,
Which is Consecration and Ordination to Ministry.
This is reflected in the Priestly Blessing in Numbers 6, (May The LORD Bless and Keep You)
Which Contains 15 Words,
And 60 Letters.

Samekh is a Perfect Circle- The Symbol of Eternity and the Endless and Divine Glory of Our God.

Samekh Represents a Sukkah- A Shelter in the Wilderness.
