Psalm 119

Psalm 119[a]

א Aleph

1  Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
    who walk according to the law of the Lord.

2  Blessed are those who keep his statutes
    and seek him with all their heart—

3  they do no wrong
    but follow his ways.

4  You have laid down precepts
    that are to be fully obeyed.

5  Oh, that my ways were steadfast
    in obeying your decrees!

6  Then I would not be put to shame
    when I consider all your commands.

7  I will praise you with an upright heart
    as I learn your righteous laws.

8  I will obey your decrees;
    do not utterly forsake me.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we start the Wonderful and Ingenious Psalm 119. It is an Acrostic, with 22 Stanzas of 8 lines apiece. Every line in the stanza begins with the SAME Hebrew Letter, which would be interesting enough, but also the Psalm has a seamless theme running through it: the Love Of The Lord and His Law (also called His "Precepts" or "Statutes"). Not only THAT, the lines in each chapter of the Psalm bear a relationship to the actual LETTER that begins each line. Each letter in the Hebrew Aleph-Bet has a plethora of meanings, and even the SHAPE of the letter comes into play. So, instead of a "Word Study", this Psalm gives us the shades of meaning at the very core of the Language. It is Truly an Inspired Work!

Since "Aleph" is the first letter of the Hebrew Alphabet, it represents Leadership, and originally looked like the head of an ox. A good leader has to be strong, like an ox, but also able to bear great burdens. Some people may see the law of God as a terrible burden that restricts our "freedom", but it is, as Paul said, a "Schoolmaster" that steers us into fruitful living. Our own Founding Fathers realized this, and carefully framed our Constitution to give us "Liberty under Law".

The results of Lawlessness can be seen in our cities right now, and it is horrible! The solution is not to create MORE laws, because the lawless won't obey the new laws either.

Christians believe that Jesus is The Fulfillment of the Law, and so, Psalm 119 is as relevant to New Testament Believers as it is to the Old. The meanings behind the letters are fascinating.
