Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 115

Psalm 115

1 Not to us, Lord, not to us
    but to your name be the glory,

    because of your love and faithfulness.

2 Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”

3 Our God is in heaven;

    he does whatever pleases him.

4 But their idols are silver and gold,

    made by human hands.

5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,

    eyes, but cannot see.

6 They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.

7 They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

8 Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

9 All you Israelites, trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.

10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.

11 You who fear him, trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.

12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us:

    He will bless his people Israel,
    he will bless the house of Aaron,

13 he will bless those who fear the Lord—
    small and great alike.

14 May the Lord cause you to flourish,

    both you and your children.

15 May you be blessed by the Lord,     the Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the Lord,

    but the earth he has given to mankind.

17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;

18 it is we who extol the Lord,

    both now and forevermore.

A Song of Ascents.

1 Happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways.
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labour of your hands;
you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.

your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
4 Thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.

5 The Lord bless you from Zion.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today's Psalm speaks of the Uniqueness of The One True God, and the futility of idols. I have a perfect story from the Ye Olde Hippy Memory Bank to go with this Psalm, and the story is still evolving to this day. For Christmas 1964, Santa brought me a guitar. Just a year earlier, in 1963, a young man in England named Eric Clapton got his first gig playing guitar.

Eric was self-taught, and, like the Beatles who were gigging around Europe at the time, he loved The Blues, a purely American Art Form. All the the Bands Eric played in started out as Blues Bands, but then achieved commercial success as they branched out into more radio-friendly Pop styles. Discontented with the direction the bands were going, Eric moved from group to group. Every band he played in are now enshrined in the memories of Rock Music Lovers, and the Classic Vinyl in good condition fetches big bucks for collectors. In whatever setting Eric found himself, his playing rose above the ordinary and became a trademark of the band.

One day, a graffiti slogan appeared upon a wall in London, saying something that caused Eric to cringe in horror:

"CLAPTON IS GOD".

Eric was certainly not a religious person, but this was too much! Unfortunately, the term "Guitar God" has become part of our language meaning a Rock Superstar. It probably originated with that blaspemous and embarrassing bit of graffitti on a London wall, half a century ago. Now, Eric was never a god, and for a long time was no "saint" either. He struggled with addiction, rage, grief and adultery. His struggles usually ended up in a song baring his soul to the entire world, and so his fans forgave him.

Recently, however, Eric has done something that "crossed the line". As a Senior Citizen in England, Eric went and got the AZ Vaccine for COVID. This vaccine is not available in the USA, for a number of reasons. After the first shot, he became very sick, but, being convinced that he had to get the second, he did so. The second reaction was something that horrified the world. He couldn't feel his hands!

The second reaction upset Eric so much that he began to criticize the vax and all that is related to it. Even heroin and stealing a Beatle's wife wasn't equal to THIS! In the latest news from across the pond, Eric states that all his so-called-friends (EXCEPT Van Morisson) have turned their backs on him, not because he refused the vax, but because he was honest about his bad reaction afterward. It wasn't enough that he OBEYED the Powers-That-Be, he is supposed to BELIEVE in them too. Shades of George Orwell!

Psalm 116 tells us of the futility of idols. We can make anything into an idol. They are not just statues of wood or gold. Isaiah tells us of a hunk of wood that is used, half for an idol, and half to cook dinner. Wood is wood. It can be carved or burned as fuel, used to build a house, or made into mulch for the garden. God made the trees that made the wood. Trees give us shade, a home, heat, and even Oxygen, but we are never to WORSHIP them. Some people are extremely gifted, and the Twentieth Century has produced some amazing Guitarists, elevating the guitart to being the premier instrument in modern music. But those who play it are not "gods' no matter how well they play. And the guitar itself is made of wood. Nice, rare, tropical hardwood perhaps, but still something that could become a house, a piece of furniture, fuel, or even an idol.

1968: Cream played LA, Clapton/Bruce/Baker. I stood right next to Clapton's 8' floor speaker. No true "god" would have left me with lifelong hearing loss, so I do not pray to him.

Instead, I pray to Yahweh through Yeshua, and having done so I finish with "AMEN!"
