Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 101

Psalm 101

Of David. A psalm.

1  I will sing of your love and justice;
    to you, Lord, I will sing praise.

2  I will be careful to lead a blameless life—
    when will you come to me?
I will conduct the affairs of my house
    with a blameless heart.

3  I will not look with approval
    on anything that is vile.
I hate what faithless people do;
    I will have no part in it.

4  The perverse of heart shall be far from me;
    I will have nothing to do with what is evil.

5  Whoever slanders their neighbor in secret,
    I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart,
    I will not tolerate.

6  My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
    that they may dwell with me;
the one whose walk is blameless
    will minister to me.

7  No one who practices deceit
    will dwell in my house;
no one who speaks falsely
    will stand in my presence.

8  Every morning I will put to silence
    all the wicked in the land;
I will cut off every evildoer
    from the city of the Lord.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Many years ago, there was a hit song called "I Try". The singer, Macy Gray, had a deep husky voice, and the song charted high in the Pop/R & B genre. It may have even gotten to #1, but in any case, all my little girl voice students wanted to sing that song. I didn't mind doing the song, but, unfortunately , the little girls didn't want to sing the song in their own voice. As other students had done back in the day of Brittney Spears, the children tried to imitate the heavily-processed, overly "Auto-tuned" vocal fry that has plagued Vocal Production since the end of the 1990's. This husky, choking, gargling vocal affectation is afflicting Pop Vocals so much that it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell one singer from another. Originally, "Auto-Tune" was a useful tool to correct one slightly flat note rather than re-record the entire vocal track. Unfortunately, it became a substitute for the years required to train a voice for pitch, timbre, strength, and flexibility. These are the voices the children heard on the radio, and so the kids thought that was the way they were supposed to sing. It took years of patient training to get the kids to focus on developing their OWN voices rather than imitating someone else's heavily processed voice.

I know of no other hit songs from the aforementioned Macy Gray, but just yesterday I read an article about her denigrating our Flag. It was on Fathers Day, no less, and Macy is of the generation that had fathers and grandfathers who fought and died for that Flag in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. I got really steamed up about her saying what she said. What did SHE ever do for this Country except be a One-Hit-Wonder on the Pop Charts? Grrrrrr. Hypocrisy is one of my biggest pet-peeves. I guess I am in good company though, because Jesus didn't like hypocrites much either.

We had months of comparing the Psalms to Music, and this time around, we are using them as models for PRAYER, so I will get to the point. David never used "Auto-Tune" when he prayed to God. He always sang to God with his authentic VOICE. Sometimes, David's voice (like Dylan's) could have been grating and even a bit off-key, as if his anguish was so overwhelming that "vocal technique" was the furthest thing from his mind. Sometimes we hear a cry for Justice or even Vengeance that grates upon our ears. Sometimes David sounds like he is complaining, which isn't very "Holy" at all! There are no Vocal Processors, Pitch Correctors, Delays, Chroruses, Flanges, or Compressors to alter David's Lament to make it more pleasing, poetic, politically correct, or socially acceptable. Unlike Macy Gray, who sang "I Try", David was not "Trying". He was BEING HIMSELF before God.

And, since God knows every fiber of our being, that is the ONLY way we can approach Him...with our TRUE VOICE.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

I find the “auto-tuned” voices like Miley Cyrus...and such...all sound the same and so boring.

Psalm 101 is such a comfort as ...

Whoever slanders their neighbor in secret,
I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart,
I will not tolerate.

Especially as we live in a day of so much wokeness and virtue signaling.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved Amerca.

Your perception is very scientific. The human voice, much like the sound of a stringed instrument, is not just one pitch. There are many pitches, fundamentals, overtones, and undertones that vibrate just a few "cents" away from each other. This gives a voice its unique timbre, and it is why one has no difficulty distinguishing Pavarotti from Domingo, from Carreras, to Bochelli. We HEAR the different pitches together as one distinct sound. Autotune snaps every part of the voice to the same frequency, which acts like "Noise Cancellation" and thins out the sound and makes it "feel" robotic. that's why computer voices are so annoying. Anyway...I didn't mean to get technical, but you understand! :-)

Amen.

It is nice to hear you both comment on the breathy sameness of the majority of singers. It is particularly disheartening to hear it infiltrate songs of praise and worship.

Just to let you know...Peg the Worship leader at my church , LOVED today’s J-Thread meditation. about Autotune. She gave it a big AMEN. :-)

I SO agree with you, Hiskid, about the breathy, choky, very SEXUAL sounds that are emitted from some singers of Worship Music. Especially “Special” Music sung with tracks. This has been going on in Church for at least 40 YEARS, and I don’t like it at all.

Thank Goodness that is not encouraged at my little church.

We are encouraged to SING God’s Word, not Choke on it. 0 :-O

Thank you BOTH for validating my observations about singing. I don’t want to sound like an old crank about it, but it’s what I DO for a living.
