Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 84

Psalm 84[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
    Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.[c]

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;
    the autumn rains also cover it with pools.[d]
7 They go from strength to strength,
    till each appears before God in Zion.

8 Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;
    listen to me, God of Jacob.
9 Look on our shield,[e] O God;
    look with favor on your anointed one.

10 Better is one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
    the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
    from those whose walk is blameless.

12 Lord Almighty,
    blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I'm aware that there is such a thing as a motorcycle with automatic transmission, but where's the fun in THAT? The whole point of riding a motorcycle is RIDING it, and that means shifting gears when appropriate. A real motorcycle has a gear box under the cylinders containing 4-5 gears and neutral. The clutch is operated by a lever located on the left hand grip. Changing gears without the clutch, or at the wrong engine speed, causes the gears to grind, and so, they are encased in a bath of oil. The case is sealed by three gaskets that keep the oil from dripping out and staining your garage floor.

Old Blue's gaskets had dried out, and she was dripping oil everywhere. I was reduced to the indignity of carrying a piece of cardboard around with me to catch the drips when I parked in a customer's driveway. It was time to visit the Shop to have the three gaskets replaced, and fresh oil.

When I went to get Blue, Al, the mechanic asked me, "When did you get your last oil change?"

(Uh-Oh, Here comes the LECTURE. It had been YEARS.)

"Why? Was it really nasty?" I asked.

"Just the Opposite. It was so clean you coulda fried chicken in it!"

How could that be? I ride that thing a LOT. Al thought about this puzzle for a bit and then said,

"ML, you're a musician, right? And you don't have a tachometer on this bike, right? And you've been riding this particular bike for almost 30 years. You probably shift gears so smoothly according to the SOUND that you probably don't even need a clutch! I'll bet you NEVER grind your gears."

Jokingly, I replied that I needed to keep my oil fresh so that I could anoint the head of a king with it. We had a good laugh over that, and I paid the (reasonable) bill and roared off into the sunset.

In the Scriptures, Oil is a symbol of The Holy Spirit. We need to be constantly filled with the Holy Spirit, but even more, we need to LISTEN to His Voice. If we don't listen, we grind our gears, dirty up our lives, and perhaps even come to a screeching halt. One way of hearing His Voice is to read His Word daily. Another is to be still and LISTEN. The Voice is always there, but we don't always listen. We should become so habituated to listening, that we hardly realize we are doing it.
