Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 69

Psalm 69[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

1 Save me, O God,
    for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in the miry depths,
    where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
    the floods engulf me.
3 I am worn out calling for help;
    my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
    looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me without reason
    outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,
    those who seek to destroy me.
I am forced to restore
    what I did not steal.

5 You, God, know my folly;
    my guilt is not hidden from you.

6 Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
7 For I endure scorn for your sake,
    and shame covers my face.
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;
9 for zeal for your house consumes me,
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
10 When I weep and fast,
    I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth,
    people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.

13 But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;
in your great love, O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.
15 Do not let the floodwaters engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up
    or the pit close its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;
    in your great mercy turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face from your servant;
    answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.
18 Come near and rescue me;
    deliver me because of my foes.

19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
20 Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters, but I found none.
21 They put gall in my food
    and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

22 May the table set before them become a snare;
    may it become retribution and[b] a trap.
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
    and their backs be bent forever.
24 Pour out your wrath on them;
    let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 May their place be deserted;
    let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute those you wound
    and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27 Charge them with crime upon crime;
    do not let them share in your salvation.
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life
    and not be listed with the righteous.

29 But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
    may your salvation, God, protect me.

30 I will praise God’s name in song
    and glorify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox,
    more than a bull with its horns and hooves.
32 The poor will see and be glad—
    you who seek God, may your hearts live!
33 The Lord hears the needy
    and does not despise his captive people.

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and all that move in them,
35 for God will save Zion
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.
Then people will settle there and possess it;
36     the children of his servants will inherit it,
    and those who love his name will dwell there.

Our Father in Heaven,
How Blessed and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
How Magnificent,
How Holy,
How Sanctified and Glorious!
When I Awake in the Morning,
You Are There.
All through the day,
You Are With Me.
And When I go to Sleep at Night,
You Are Still Watching Over Us All.

We Plead with You, that You will Give Favor To Your People,
And make the lies of the enemy so obvious,

Psalm 123

A Song of Ascents.

1 To you I lift up my eyes,
O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
2 As the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
until he has mercy upon us.

3 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
4 Our soul has had more than its fill
of the scorn of those who are at ease,
of the contempt of the proud.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today is one of those mornings when I tell three stories that all come together in the end.

1. The State of Massachusetts requires annual Motorcycle Inspections. These are only available in the Month of May, and compliance is advertised by a color-coded sticker on the license plate. Although Gas Stations and Mechanics flock to the state for the "privilege" of being a Vehicle Inspection Station, NOBODY wants to do motorcycles. It doesn't require any special equipment, except duct Tape to measure the High Beam, but, evidently, nobody wants to be bothered with BIKERS. And so, the first May of my residence in MA, I rode from gas station to gas station, begging to have my bike inspected, and being turned down and rejected through four different towns! Getting caught without a sticker is like driving an unregistered car: it can get you in big trouble here in the Peoples Republic of Marxichusetts.

Suddenly, I saw, parked in front of a mattress store, the most BEAUTIFUL purple chopper I had ever seen. It was gleaming with chrome, had a customized motor, and, most importantly, had a valid, current, inspection sticker on the license plate. I roared to a stop, dismounted, and entered the store.

The person who owned the bike was the proprietor of the store. He was also what the public calls an "outlaw biker" and what we bikers call a "One-Percenter". (This is due to the fact that only about 1% of bikers are on the wrong side of the Law.) I complimented him on his beautiful bike and asked him where he got his sticker.

"It's a place I go every year, but it's only for US (meaning 1%-ers), but if you tell 'em I sent you, it'll be OK."

Well, if they were an authorized MA Inspection Station, it would have to be OK, but I took the guy's name anyway. Then I went off in search of this garage.

Finally, I found it, at the back of an Industrial Park, had my bike inspected, got my sticker, and became friends with the mechanic. It's where I go every year now for my sticker, and it has become a Maytime Ritual. I spend more time hanging out with Al, the mechanic, than I do for the inspection itself. And, of course, more than once, I have invited Al to come to church.

2. Bobby was horribly abused as a child. As a result, he got into drugs and self-destructive behavior. The ministry of Teen Challenge saved his life and turned it around, and he just received his diploma from Bible College and is now an Assistant Pastor at my Church. He still has health issues, and likes to hike in the woods to lose weight and meditate.

3. Al, my mechanic friend was hiking in the State Forest when he came across an overweight man who was so tired and thirsty he could hardly breath. Al immediately gave the man some water and asked him what was going on.

"I lost the trail HOURS ago, and can't find my way back to the Ranger Station," the man said. "I thought I was going to die!" (This is not unusual for this particular forest. Helicopters fly over regularly to find lost hikers. While it would be cheaper to MARK the trails than it is to deploy helicopters, it is much more cool and dramatic than walking through the woods with a bucket of yellow paint!)

Well, Al was headed back that way so they walked together, and talked all the way back, and became friends.

And now, for the connection! Yesterday, I went for my sticker, and invited Al to church, as per my normal ritual. When I told him which church, he said:

"I know Pastor Bobby! I met him, lost on the trail in the State Forest!" Now I'll HAVE to go to your church!

Coincidence? I think NOT!
