Cdl. Mahony Sued for Sexually Assaulting Male Teen

Lawsuit charges LA archdiocese with cover-up

LOS ANGELES (ChurchMilitant.com) (warning: some explicit content) - A new lawsuit accuses California Cdl. Roger Mahony of sexually abusing a male minor. It is the first such lawsuit ever brought against the former archbishop of Los Angeles.

Filed April 19 in Los Angeles Superior Court, the plaintiff, under the alias John Doe, is suing "The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles," which includes Cdl. Roger Mahony and staff of the archdiocese.

The lawsuit alleges Mahony "repeatedly sexually assaulted, molested and abused" Doe in 1986, when he was 17. The plaintiff also accuses the archdiocese of knowing about the archbishop's abuse and covering it up.

Track Record of Cover-Up

This accords with the track record of the L.A. archdiocese under Mahony's leadership from 1985–2011, when Mahony and his team gained a notorious reputation for covering up sex abuse and protecting predators, including sending priests out of state to escape prosecution.

His actions led to the single largest sex abuse payout in U.S. history: $660 million in 2007. The archdiocese has since shelled out millions more.

Why did the Vatican not remove this guy? They knew they had a child pedophile problem settling cases in the hundreds of millions. Yet, they leave their most notorious predator in charge of a large one of the largest dioceses in the country?
Oh, yes, he’s a liberal too.

I’ve covered the scandal in the Diocese of Orange since 2003, and even then it was evident to me that this wasn’t just a problem of a few bad padres.

The cover-up involved political players. . .

The cover-up involved police. In 1984, Oliver O’Grady, an Irish priest working in Stockton, admitted to local detectives that he had molested children. But when lieutenants of Roger Mahony, who was then bishop of the Diocese of Stockton, promised to put O’Grady into therapy and keep him away from children, the detectives halted their investigation. . .

The cover-up involved district attorneys. In 1975, church officials in Orange County told prosecutors that Eleuterio Ramos had molested a boy; the district attorney’s office suggested psychological care instead of prison. Ramos became the most prolific pedophile priest in Orange County history, admitting to a victim last decade that he assaulted at least 25 boys.

Our sainted Sen. Kamala Harris, who trumpets her prosecution of Backpage.com as evidence that she’s tough on sex crimes, is also among those tarred in my mind. In 2005, while she was San Francisco’s district attorney, Harris rebuffed a public-records request by SF Weekly to release personnel files from the Archdiocese of San Francisco. (Her predecessor had planned to make them public after prosecuting criminal priests, but the California Supreme Court stopped those cases when it declared unconstitutional a 2002 law that lifted the criminal statute of limitations.) Similar archives in Boston had exposed the scope of the scandal there. “We’re not interested in selling out our victims to look good in the paper,” Harris told SF Weekly in a statement — this, even though many of those victims pleaded with her to release the documents.

And she never prosecuted any pedophile priest. . .

This tendency of major religions to constantly be involved in sex abuse accusations, is but one reason a lot of the younger generations chose not to consider themselves Catholic or even Christian. That often goes double for any children they may be raising. This is unfortunate, as much of our shared culture as Americans comes from The Bible and it’s many lessons.

This plus schools trying to scrub all religious aspects out of education results in huge numbers of ‘unchurched’ individuals. They are likely to look to Social Causes to give them a sense of belonging and purpose.

“Why did the Vatican not remove this guy?”

Pope Benedict XVI successfully removed Mahony and hundreds of others deviants from the priesthood.

Bergoglio re-installed Mahony and all the others.

Moral of the story: do not die in mortal sin.

has the catholic church ALWAYS been the beacon of homosexuals and child molesters? Or is this something new?

Sounds like Pope Francis is the Joe Biden of the papacy. What he has done now is to expose the Church to hundreds of millions in lawsuits and complete financial ruination by reinstalling Mahony with full knowledge of his history of involvement in the entire Church pedophilia area. The Vatican has fixed nothing and,a although Catholic, I think the RICO statute should be applied to the church hierarchy for continuing to foster this criminal activity

It’s relatively new. Several decades ago Catholic seminaries began admitting large numbers of homosexuals. Of course there’va always been homosexuals in the priesthood, but they were well-meaning, devout Catholic men who, because they weren’t called to family life, decided to make the priesthood their calling. They took their vows and did their best to live up to them and be good and faithful priests. During the ‘60s and 70s this all changed. The seminaries became hotbeds of homosexual activity, and traditional-minded men were sidelined and discouraged and disgusted. The priesthood reached a tipping point and open homosexual activity became widespread. And where you have male homosexuals you inevitably have pederasty.

Bergoglio dances with the ones who brung him. I remember Mahony enthusiastically flying to Rome to vote for B16’s successor and then waxing poetic about how thrilled he was to vote for Bergoglio, the great progressive pope he and his ilk been scheming to install for decades.

Many sources have reported that the Soviets spent huge amounts of time and money infiltrating commie fags into the seminaries, and yet that bit of history never seems to get legs.

Every time the topic arises, it is as though no one has ever heard of the Soviet program.

Is this because people, for some reason, find it difficult to believe this “dog bites man” story?

The Church was not immune to the so-called “sexual revolution” of the 1960s and 1970s. Many unfit individuals entered the priesthood. Some of these individuals rose to positions of great power and influence.

The Church is still reeling from that onslaught.

The Los Angeles archdiocese has cleaned up its act considerably - at great cost.

I don’t know the background on this guy but I am always leery of a lawsuit based on events which supposedly happened 35 years ago. How do you defend yourself? This is why we have statutes of limitation.

You're mistaken on several points.

Mahony has never been removed from the priesthood. He retired on schedule as Abp of LA in 2011. His successor, Abp Gomez, removed him from all public duties in the archdiocese in 2013. (He's allowed to celebrate Mass, but not allowed to speak publicly and not supposed to administer Confirmation, etc.)

He remained a Cardinal and voted in the conclave that elected +Francis. (He's now 85, so would not be eligible to vote in any future conclave.)

This, in the long run, or perhaps even the not-so-long run, is going to bring down the Western church in its present form.

Please provide evidence that Mahoney "was removed from the priesthood", by Benedict or by anyone else.

Exactly. I don’t believe this slanderous account, Mahony is a liberal but not a child molester.
