Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged" there is a strange chapter about an Oak Tree that gets struck by lightening:

The great oak tree had stood on a hill over the Hudson, in a lonely spot of the Taggart estate. Eddie Willers, aged seven, liked to come and look at that tree. It had stood there for hundreds of years, and he thought it would always stand there.

The stately Oak is struck and split open, revealing nothing but rot inside. It symbolizes huge government bureaucracies that seem "too big to fail". All things pass away, even giant trees that seem like they will live forever. Like the Oak in the novel, some things appear huge, powerful, and indestructible, but are so rotten inside that the slightest stress can cause it to crumble.

Ironically, the Olive Tree, growing in the harsh climate of the Middle East, is not a particularly attractive tree. Its branches are gnarly and twisted, and its bark is rough and mottled grey. It is not stately or powerful like the Oak, nor does it grow very tall. And yet, I have seen Olive Trees in Jerusalem that some claim are thousands of years old.That may be an exaggeration, but there is no question that these trees are VERY old.

The Psalmist uses the Olive Tree, rather than the Oak, to describe the Righteous Person who is firmly rooted in God's Word. He may seem weak and unattractive to the World, but he will have staying power that will long outlive a haughty "oak" full of rot inside.

Ayn Rand was not a Believer, but she did get some things right. Her prediction of a collectivist "Deep State" that stifles creativity and initiative with government control, was prescient!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

I planted our front-yard showcase olive tree out of a ten-gallon pot when we moved into our new home 33 years ago. Last week we paid good money to have it trimmed. Our kids climbed it, and their kids. After we're gone, as long as Jesus tarries, it will be climbed. And admired--it's the best tree on the block.

I'd bet Jesus loves olive trees. Didn't they fill His Garden? He spent quality time under them, with only them as His companions in that dreadful hour.

Amen.

Psalm 5

To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
give heed to my sighing.
2 Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.

7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down towards your holy temple
in awe of you.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.

9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favour as with a shield.
