University of Chicago students couldn’t attend Mass this weekend because church officials insisted it’s unsafe to worship when 0.6 percent of young people threatened more by flu contracts COVID-19.
This was not the result of a directive from the secular UChicago administration. The decision came directly from the archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich, who ordered the campus church to cancel Mass for students due to the campus COVID “outbreak.” Not only did the bishop cancel Mass for students on campus, but he instructed them not to attend anywhere else.
Per Cupich’s directive, Calvert House Chaplain Fr. Andrew Liaugminas and Associate Director of Campus Ministry Matthew Moran agreed to bar students from the Eucharist. Moran wrote the following in an April 16 email to undergrads: “Recognizing that most of our congregation is affiliated with the University, the Archdiocese has asked us to refrain from all in-person liturgies and events while the special measures are in force.”

I went to the University of Chicago. The on-campus chapel, “Calvert House” was not worth attending. St. Thomas the Apostle on 55th was closer to me dorm and much better. The Institure of Christ the King has a Church within walking distance from the south edge of campus at 63rd and Woodlawn. The Bishop does not have the authority to state that college students shouldn’t go to Mass. It is irrational, and judgment of the seriousness of CCP-Virus risk is beyond the bishop’s competency, so I would have just gone to the Tnstitute Church. I am sorry the Institute didn’t exist when I was in college.
The road to hell is paved with the bones of priests and monks, and the skulls of bishops are the lampposts that light the path.
Christ the King: great church that offers the TLM. I would encourage all the affected students to attend their Masses.
Pathetic and weak.
How does this make the Archbishop “corrupt” ?
Cardinal Cupcake.
The hierarchy should be disturbed that young people, who rarely if ever attend Mass, were just encouraged to continue that. Without young Catholics who believe in the Mass, there is no future for this Church in the West; the imported “replacement Americans” who are nominally Catholic aren’t supporting anything financially, and the Americans that did support the institution are ageing/dying.
Doing the devil’s work.
Cardinals; Mundeline,Stritch, priests like my former pastor Memmesheimer must be spinning in the graves
You are correct. It’s as though they are purposely cutting themselves off at the knees. The young must be taught and encouraged or they will fall away.
None of these bishops cancelling Masses, including Frankie, have taken the time to realize that they just might be held responsible for many in their flock committing mortal sin for not going to Mass.
It’s one thing to give a dispensation, it’s entirely another to forbid mass. I don’t believe a bishop has it within his authority to prevent anyone attending any mass.
