Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 39

Psalm 39[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

1 I said, “I will watch my ways
    and keep my tongue from sin;
I will put a muzzle on my mouth
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
2 So I remained utterly silent,
    not even saying anything good.
But my anguish increased;
3     my heart grew hot within me.
While I meditated, the fire burned;
    then I spoke with my tongue:

4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
    even those who seem secure.[b]

6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
    in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
    without knowing whose it will finally be.

7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.
8 Save me from all my transgressions;
    do not make me the scorn of fools.
9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
    for you are the one who has done this.
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
11 When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,
    you consume their wealth like a moth—
    surely everyone is but a breath.

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;
    do not be deaf to my weeping.
I dwell with you as a foreigner,
    a stranger, as all my ancestors were.
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”

Dear Father in Heaven,
Blessed Are You,
Oh LORD, Our God,
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
Our Rock and Our Redeemer!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For You Alone Are Worthy;
You Alone Are Holy;
You Alone Are Righteous and Just;
And You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
How Wonderful Are Your Precepts;

Let All That Has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,

In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our Beloved USA
We Ask That Your People Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.

1 Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
let those who hate him flee before him.

let them exult before God;
let them be jubilant with joy.

4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name;

5 Father of orphans and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.
6 God gives the desolate a home to live in;

The women at home divide the spoil,
13 though they stay among the sheepfolds—
the wings of a dove covered with silver,
its pinions with green gold.
14 When the Almighty* scattered kings there,
snow fell on Zalmon.

15 O mighty mountain, mountain of Bashan;
O many-peaked mountain, mountain of Bashan!
16 Why do you look with envy, O many-peaked mountain,
at the mount that God desired for his abode,
where the Lord will reside for ever?

17 With mighty chariotry, twice ten thousand,
thousands upon thousands,
the Lord came from Sinai into the holy place.*
18 You ascended the high mount,
leading captives in your train
and receiving gifts from people,
even from those who rebel against the Lord God’s abiding there.
19 Blessed be the Lord,
who daily bears us up;
God is our salvation.

20 Our God is a God of salvation,
and to God, the Lord, belongs escape from death.

21 But God will shatter the heads of his enemies,
the hairy crown of those who walk in their guilty ways.
22 The Lord said,
‘I will bring them back from Bashan,
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
23 so that you may bathe* your feet in blood,
so that the tongues of your dogs may have their share from the foe.’

24 Your solemn processions are seen,* O God,
the processions of my God, my King, into the sanctuary—
25 the singers in front, the musicians last,
between them girls playing tambourines:
26 ‘Bless God in the great congregation,
the Lord, O you who are of Israel’s fountain!’
27 There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead,
the princes of Judah in a body,
the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.

28 Summon your might, O God;
show your strength, O God, as you have done for us before.
29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings bear gifts to you.
30 Rebuke the wild animals that live among the reeds,
the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples.
Trample* under foot those who lust after tribute;
scatter the peoples who delight in war.*
31 Let bronze be brought from Egypt;
let Ethiopia* hasten to stretch out its hands to God.

32 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth;
sing praises to the Lord,

33 O rider in the heavens, the ancient heavens;
listen, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice.
34 Ascribe power to God,
whose majesty is over Israel;
and whose power is in the skies.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

One of the most poignant and lyrical songs by Paul Simon is on his "Rhymin' Simon" album. It's called American Tune. While the Wikipedia Article on this song acknowledges that the tune was lifted from an Ancient Hymn, there was no indication in the original Album Liner notes stating this fact.

Imagine my horror when, I listened to Bach's "St Matthew's Passion", and there was that Tune again!

I was so annoyed that Simon had not credited Bach for the melody that I penned this ditty: (Same melody!)

When Bach composed this music,
I'm sure he had no idea,
That two hundred years later,
The tune would reappear
On the Rhymin' Simon album.
I guess it was supposed,
That Johann couldn't sue them,
Because he's decomposed!

Then, I discovered in my own research on Bach's Chorales, that the melody was even older than Bach! It's an ancient hymn called O Sacred Head, Now Wounded. Johann didn't actually steal it though. These hymns were already known and beloved by the congregation. Bach's job, as Kappelmeister (Minister of Music) was to arrange the hymns for every Sunday Morning and Feast Day. The way Bach handled this "job" was amazing. He arranged the already known hymns into new arrangements, wrote other music to surround the hymns, with solos, choral pieces, and even counterpoint surrounding the original hymn, turning it into a brand new piece. Many of "Bach's Greatest Hits" are these little pieces inserted in the middle of a Chorale written for a Sunday Morning. (My Favorite is from Chorale #140 Sleepers Awake!). So Paul Simon didn't actually steal the melody, he just reused it without attribution.

Perhaps, as a Songwriter, I was annoyed that Simon, a brilliant, MENSA-level songwriter who was perhaps one of the greatest of his generation, took the tune of a Christian Hymn without so much as a "Thank You" to the guy who wrote it, or to the Man the song was about in the first place. Oh Well/rant off.

As we read the Psalms as PRAYERS, we need to also remember that they are SONGS as well, and David Ben Jesse is the first "published" songwriter in History. I wish I knew the Melodies of these Psalms. I am sure they will be sung in Heaven (with proper attribution, of course!)

Mozart composed variations on “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” which is the same tune as “Baa Baa Black Sheep.”
