Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 25
Psalm 25[a]
Of David.
1 In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.
2 I trust in you;
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3 No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame,
but shame will come on those
who are treacherous without cause.
4 Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you, Lord, are good.
8 Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
9 He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them his way.
10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful
toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
11 For the sake of your name, Lord,
forgive my iniquity, though it is great.
12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?
He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.[b]
13 They will spend their days in prosperity,
and their descendants will inherit the land.
14 The Lord confides in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are ever on the Lord,
for only he will release my feet from the snare.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart
and free me from my anguish.
18 Look on my affliction and my distress
and take away all my sins.
19 See how numerous are my enemies
and how fiercely they hate me!
20 Guard my life and rescue me;
do not let me be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope, Lord,[c] is in you.
22 Deliver Israel, O God,
from all their troubles!

Psalm 59
To the leader: Do Not Destroy. Of David. A Miktam, when Saul ordered his house to be watched in order to kill him.
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
protect me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from those who work evil;
from the bloodthirsty save me.
3 Even now they lie in wait for my life;
the mighty stir up strife against me.
For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
Rouse yourself, come to my help and see!
5 You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Awake to punish all the nations;
spare none of those who treacherously plot evil.
Selah
6 Each evening they come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths,
with sharp words* on their lips—
for ‘Who’, they think,* ‘will hear us?’
8 But you laugh at them, O Lord;
you hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my strength, I will watch for you;
for you, O God, are my fortress.
10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me;
my God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.
11 Do not kill them, or my people may forget;
make them totter by your power, and bring them down,
O Lord, our shield.
12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13 consume them in wrath;
consume them until they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules over Jacob.
Selah
14 Each evening they come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
15 They roam about for food,
and growl if they do not get their fill.
16 But I will sing of your might;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been a fortress for me
and a refuge on the day of my distress.
17 O my strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

It's Officially Spring, and my Harley is shined up, ready for Inspection, and looking forward to some beautiful rides in Southeastern New England. Today's Psalm reminded me of just such a ride last year, during the COVID lockdown.
While I am quite capable of keeping pace on highways on the bike, I find the Interstate boring and would much rather take the turning, curvy, Country Roads. One of my favorite runs is from one end of Rte. 105 in Halifax to the other in Marion at the very end of Buzzards Bay. This lovely road goes through farmland, old New England Villages, huge lakes and reservoirs, haunted forests, Native-American Cemeteries, and, eventually, to the ocean. At the very end of this road, one can either turn EAST and come home via Wareham and Cape Cod, or go WEST and end up in New Bedford, home of the Whaling Museum and National Historic Park. Up until a certain day last year, I had always taken the Eastern Route, because it was a shorter route home.
Anyway, on one trip, I came to the end of 105 and chose the other direction, because I wanted some variety. I was getting hungry, and no restaurants were open because of the quarantine, but I figured that since New Bedford was the home of a National Park, there had to be SOMEPLACE open!
All along Route 6 West were closed restaurants, and I was getting more and more hungry. Finally, I went over the Fairhaven Bridge, and entered New Bedford. I could see the Museum across the bridge. I could also see, from my vantage point, that Everything was CLOSED.
OK...so what next? I reached another crossroads. One way would put me on the Interstate (boring), and the other way would put me on Route 18 North...straight home. I chose Route 18, because it looked right in my own eyes.
Now, before I continue my story, I must interject here that during the proliferation of Whaling, New Bedford was the wealthiest City in New England. However, the bottom fell out of the Whaling Industry due to the discovery and development of Petroleum, and then, electricity. (So, "Fossil Fuels" saved the Whales, but I digress!). After the collapse of the industry, and filled with unemployed sailors and fishermen from all over the world, New Bedford fell into poverty and decay. The town center, which extends for miles, became poor, neglected, and somewhat dangerous, as inner-cities can be. The Interstate skirts this area completely, so that people can go to the National Park without having to drive through it. The main street that goes through the center of this neglected area is, you guessed it, Route 18. And there I was, tired, hungry, needing to use a rest room, putting along at 25 mph and having to stop at every red light. On every corner were unemployed, disenfranchised Youts, wearing masks and looking for something to do. And, of course, all the stores and restaurants were closed...except for the Liquor Stores, which our esteemed gov'nah considered "Essential Businesses."
After what seemed like forever, Route 18 finally burst forth from the bondage of the inner-city, and I pinned the throttle and headed home....just in time! (LOL)
Psalm 26 asks God to direct our paths. When we take a road that seems right at the time, but do not consult with The Lord about our decision, it can lead to trouble. In my own mind, Route 18 was the most direct road to home, with the least amount of twists and turns, and my sense of direction told me I was going Northeast, which was exactly the direction I wanted to go. We have instincts and a sense of direction for a reason, and God wants us to use the gifts He gave us to make decisions. But we are NEVER to leave Him out of the equation. Like it says in Proverbs 3:5-6:
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Perhaps God would have directed me to take a small portion of the Interstate two or three exits to get home more efficiently, but I had other plans! I was being stubborn. I didn't want to be bored! Well, Downtown New Bedford may be a lot of things, but it certainly couldn't be called "BORING"!

Verses 4&5 are among my favorites, long-ago memorized and often invoked: your ways, your paths. Somehow, I am reminded here of Bunyan's Christian.

Reminds me of the Exodus, how God led the children of Israel in an indirect route—to the Red Sea—instead of the direct route through Philistine territory (and war).

I think that the construction of the Interstate, which avoided the center of town, contributed to the town center’s isolation and desolation.
Kind of like The Bates Motel.
Good analogy though, with the Exodus! :-)
