Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 7
Psalm 7[a]
A shiggaion[b] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjamite.
1 Lord my God, I take refuge in you;
save and deliver me from all who pursue me,
2 or they will tear me apart like a lion
and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.
3 Lord my God, if I have done this
and there is guilt on my hands—
4 if I have repaid my ally with evil
or without cause have robbed my foe—
5 then let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
let him trample my life to the ground
and make me sleep in the dust.[c]
6 Arise, Lord, in your anger;
rise up against the rage of my enemies.
Awake, my God; decree justice.
7 Let the assembled peoples gather around you,
while you sit enthroned over them on high.
8 Let the Lord judge the peoples.
Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness,
according to my integrity, O Most High.
9 Bring to an end the violence of the wicked
and make the righteous secure—
you, the righteous God
who probes minds and hearts.
10 My shield[d] is God Most High,
who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge,
a God who displays his wrath every day.
12 If he does not relent,
he[e] will sharpen his sword;
he will bend and string his bow.
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons;
he makes ready his flaming arrows.
14 Whoever is pregnant with evil
conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment.
15 Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out
falls into the pit they have made.
16 The trouble they cause recoils on them;
their violence comes down on their own heads.
17 I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness;
I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In my personal devotional reading, I am currently in The Book of Job. All through the Book, Job is confronted by his so-called "friends" who castigate him for his suffering. The theory behind their verbal abuse is something Eastern religions call "Karma". Christians call it "Sowing and Reaping". Secular Science calls it "Cause and Effect". The principle is simple...if one does bad things, bad things will happen to that person. We are all sinners, but the misery inflicted upon Jonah seemed to be way out of proportion to any sins he may have committed.
In fact, the opening Chapter of this difficult Book clearly states that Job was a good man, and he even tried to make atonement for his family, just in case they had sinned. The alleged "friends" could not see beyond their simple theories of reciprocity to discern that Job's suffering would eventually reveal God in His Glory for generations to come.
Job has become the universal symbol of Patience and Loyalty, while his friends have come down through History as quintessential "Jerks". While some of their admonitions may have sounded wise when they spoke them, I don't think any of their sayings have come down through the Ages as a comforting Bible Quote. Yet, here are a few quotes from the mouth of Job:
"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." (Job 1:21)
25 I know that my redeemer lives,
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet in my flesh I will see God;
27 I myself will see him
with my own eyes—I, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me! (Job 19)
"Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him." (Job 15:13 KJV)
Like Job, David maintains his innocence in Psalm 7. This is not an arrogant "I didn't do it!", but rather a plea to God for mercy. David prays that the wicked who pursue him and falsely accuse him will fall into their own traps. Like Job, David pleads his case before God, knowing that He is the Ultimate Righteous Judge, and will always adjudicate rightly, even when we don't understand it at the time.
And that's where Faith comes in!

Psalm 5
To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.
1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
give heed to my sighing.
2 Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.
7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down towards your holy temple
in awe of you.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favour as with a shield.
