How in God’s name did you come to the conclusion that I stopped reading because I assumed the author was Jewish. Do only Jews use that designation? I did not know that. The article may have made a great deal of sense. I do not know. I just prefer not using my time reading articles that I find offensive. I say that not as a Christian but as a defender of Western civilization. It is a choice, not a passion. I could object to people using the term Wednesday because it’s origin as a pagan god.

BCE is how Jews reference what you would reference as before the birth of that guy that we do not believe has any holy significance, if he actually existed. Hence before the common era, rather than before what’s his name.

Do any gentiles use the BCE thing? You certainly know that it is based on the birth of the baby Jesus, our lord and savior. You seem to have an aversion to using his name. Do you use words like Wednesday, Thursday, January, etc? Do you find them offensive? I’m a follower of what the 21st koan of the Mumonkan calls “Ein aufgetrockneter Schmutzspalel.” I’m really not offended by anything, but it’s really sad to see Western civilization going into the crapper.

I don’t find BC AD offensive, just inaccurate. You are free to believe in your mythology. This is America. We have freedom of religion.

You apparently find other religions to be offensive. Perhaps you could restart the Crusades.

Daveinyork, who is the arbiter of accuracy? I think that the vast majority of Westerners and many non-Westerners would agree with my position on the AD/BC issue. It has nothing to do with my beliefs in mythology as you call it. That is why I suggest you have your meds increased. The only religion I find offensive is Buddhism. Sorry Yun-men.

Well I don’t think we should use the pagan Gregorian calendar, at all, with its dedication Janus, Mars, Julius Caesar, Augustus, etc.

But here we are.

I don’t think the author can read his own hypocrisy. Use a Christian calendar then call it BCE.

And that might be a more accurate story or an updated version, I’m not sure.
Thanks for sharing!

I don’t think we should speak English. But here we are. I wish frogs had wings so they wouldn’t bump their little bottoms. Is that enough craziness for you? It’s time to increase your meds.

What language do you think we should be speaking, and why?

Actually it was a serious question.

For anyone else on Earth, the first choice for a second language is English.

For an English speaker, well, we're pretty much stuck. English is the lingua franca of international trade, of diplomacy and of science. It's where French was in the 17th and 18th centuries.

I've heard that Czech is remarkably concise, that Loglan is logical to a fault and Esperanto still has its followers.

Which language would you choose if you had to learn a new one?

I can get by in German and Bahasa Indonesian. The lingua franca of the future is Chinese. They produce about four times the number of engineers than us. They may, or may not, be the same quality. I don’t know. The have 30 million youth studying classical piano. We have 30 million aspiring rap singers. We have them beat in the diversity department. Repeat after me: Diversity is our strength. And remember 2+ 2 = 5 or so they say.

Makes sense to learn Chinese, even if Communist China implodes (which I think it will).

Loglan is derived from English, Chinese (Beijing dialect), Hindi, Russian, Spanish, French, Japanese, German. these are the 8 most widely spoken languages, listed from most popular to less popular. Arabic didn’t quite make the cut.

Therefore knowledge of English and Chinese gives the largest possibility of understanding with a random terrestrial human...
