Malachi 1
Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices
6 “A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.
“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.
“But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’
7 “By offering defiled food on my altar.
“But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’
“By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible. 8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.
9 “Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10 “Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11 My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.
12 “But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food is contemptible.’ 13 And you say, ‘What a burden!’ and you sniff at it contemptuously,” says the Lord Almighty.
“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord. 14 “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,” says the Lord Almighty, “and my name is to be feared among the nations.

Psalm 64
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.
7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.
10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

A friend of mine, Yael, ran a thrift store. The proceeds went to a good cause (AIDS Research), but it was overwhelming running the store herself. She accepted gratefully every donation, but a lot of stuff was not salable. And so it piled up in the store without any discernible pattern or merchandising. Unless a customer was adventurous and liked to "dig for buried treasure", she was unlikely to find anything. And so, sales plummeted, "donations" piled up, and soon the landlord forced Yael to leave and take all the junk with her. At each new location, the pattern was the same. It was unfortunate, because there really were some treasures somewhere in that store. You just had to find them.
Today's Chapter from Malachi reminded me of Yael's Thrift Store. During the "Intertestamental Period" (What Protestant Christians call the space of time between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament), there were 400 years of spiritual decline and political decay in Israel. Although there were Spiritual Writings during this period, which are recognized as canonical by Catholic and Orthodox, it is agreed all around that these were grim times indeed.
The Services in the Temple suffered because of the various conquerors that swept through the land, and it was during this period that the Miracle of Hanukkah took place. God was still with His People, even though there were no major Prophets during that time.
The last Prophet we hear from before this long, dark period is Malachi. Malachi was very concerned with the morality of the people who were supposed to be in charge. These leaders were keeping up with the format of the Temple Services, but were sacrificing animals for which they had no use. It was a great way to get rid of blind sheep, blemished sheep, lame sheep, or whatever, and feel JUSTIFIED in doing so. They were, in essence, robbing God. Like in Yael's Thrift Shop, these useless sacrifices piled up, and were not helpful to the cause. God called Malachi to rebuke the leaders for this, as well as other practices.
True giving comes from the heart, and is something you would love to receive yourself. It is not "dumping" something that you neither need nor want.

With forty-three (successful) years’ experience operating 15,000 square-foot thrift stores, I understand all-too-well the challenges Yael faced. You’ve found a wonderful analogy for the malady described in Malachi. God sorts sacrifices into “acceptable” and “unacceptable” and discards appropriately, which Yael failed to do. He is judging the motives of our hearts, which are evident in our gifts. And that is why not everyone goes to heaven.

Clothing is the raison d'être for thrift stores; when done properly, ultimately two-thirds of donations are discarded, but none of it goes to the landfill. Huge quantities are compressed into 900-pound bales and sold for pennies-on-the-pound to rag companies, which export America's castoffs to third-world countries to clothe the world's poor.
