Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds
.
Zechariah 10
The Lord Will Care for Judah
10 Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime;
it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms.
He gives showers of rain to all people,
and plants of the field to everyone.
2 The idols speak deceitfully,
diviners see visions that lie;
they tell dreams that are false,
they give comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wander like sheep
oppressed for lack of a shepherd.
3 “My anger burns against the shepherds,
and I will punish the leaders;
for the Lord Almighty will care
for his flock, the people of Judah,
and make them like a proud horse in battle.
4 From Judah will come the cornerstone,
from him the tent peg,
from him the battle bow,
from him every ruler.
5 Together they[a] will be like warriors in battle
trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets.
They will fight because the Lord is with them,
and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame.
6 “I will strengthen Judah
and save the tribes of Joseph.
I will restore them
because I have compassion on them.
They will be as though
I had not rejected them,
for I am the Lord their God
and I will answer them.
7 The Ephraimites will become like warriors,
and their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their children will see it and be joyful;
their hearts will rejoice in the Lord.
8 I will signal for them
and gather them in.
Surely I will redeem them;
they will be as numerous as before.
9 Though I scatter them among the peoples,
yet in distant lands they will remember me.
They and their children will survive,
and they will return.
10 I will bring them back from Egypt
and gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon,
and there will not be room enough for them.
11 They will pass through the sea of trouble;
the surging sea will be subdued
and all the depths of the Nile will dry up.
Assyria’s pride will be brought down
and Egypt’s scepter will pass away.
12 I will strengthen them in the Lord
and in his name they will live securely,”
declares the Lord.
New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)
In his Messianic Prophecy, Zechariah has a lot to stay about shepherds.

Oh LORD,
You are Forever Holy and Righteous.

It is You Who Stretched out the Heavens,
And it is You Who laid the Foundations of the Earth.

Rock of Ages,
Eternal,
and Almighty,
We Can Do Nothing But Fall On Our Faces
Before You in Endless Worship and Thanksgiving!
We Thank You For Your Mighty,
Exquisite,
Holy,
and Immutable Word!
Let All That Has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.
LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.
We Pray For Our Beloved USA
We Ask That Your People Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,

Psalm 58
To the leader: Do Not Destroy. Of David. A Miktam.
1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?*
Do you judge people fairly?
2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands deal out violence on earth.
3 The wicked go astray from the womb;
they err from their birth, speaking lies.
4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers
or of the cunning enchanter.
6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths;
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7 Let them vanish like water that runs away;
like grass let them be trodden down* and wither.
8 Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime;
like the untimely birth that never sees the sun.
9 Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns,
whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away!
10 The righteous will rejoice when they see vengeance done;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 People will say, ‘Surely there is a reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who judges on earth.’

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Back in the days when Public School actually taught children how to read, we were given a Summer Reading List. Perhaps this is still done, but I'll bet the books on the list are not the same. Anyway, I diligently ignored the books on the list and devoured Dostoevsky instead. I read ten books that summer but they were not the ones assigned. I still remember the conversation with my Tenth Grade English Teach, Miss S.
Miss S: "Did you read 'A Separate Peace'?"
Me: "No".
Miss S: How about 'Cheaper By The Dozen'?"
Me: "No."
Miss S:"'Lord of the Flies'?"
Me: "No."
Miss S: "Did you, in fact, read ANYTHING this summer?"
Me: "Oh yes. I read 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Idiot', 'The Brothers Karamazov', 'And Quiet Flows The Don', 'The Bridge on the Drina', '1984', 'Animal Farm', and a couple of shorter books."
Miss S. paused for a minute, and then huffed, "Well you OBVIOUSLY like to read."
I know I was being an obnoxious brat at the time, but it was true. I LOVE to read (I have read "Moby Dick" eight times and due to read it again.)
Of course I have since read the books on the ninth-grade reading list so that I can at least say I did. I noticed an interesting theme that ties one of the books on that list, "Lord of the Flies", with one of my alternates, "Crime and Punishment".
Both of those books start out with spoiled youths who find themselves in a dangerous and difficult spot. In "Lord of the Flies" it is a group of British Schoolboys shipwrecked on a desert island. In "Crime and Punishment", it is a student, Raskalnikov, stuck in St. Petersburg without even enough money to eat or continue his studies. In both books, the youths, who have exaggerated estimations of their own importance, end up resorting to cruelty and murder to achieve their ends. Like sheep without a shepherd, the characters stray so badly that there seems little hope of redemption. They revert back to savagery and commit heinous acts of violence, and consider themselves perfectly justified in doing so.
In "Lord of the Flies", the boys are eventually rescued, and have to reenter Civilization with the shame of what they have done. They are discovered and exposed in their sin by their rescuer.
In "Crime and Punishment", the discovery is different. The Police Inspector, Porfiry Petrovich, is a rumpled, unimposing person, (I think he was the model for Peter Falk's 'Inspector Columbo'), who KNOWS Raskalinikov did the brutal murder of the Pawnbroker and her elderly sister. However, he has no forensic evidence, and can't even arrest Raskalnikov without a confession.
Like Columbo, the humble policeman keeps calling Raskalnikov into the station, under the guise of asking the student for advice in solving the crime. Raskalnikov is so flattered by the attention that he gets deeper and deeper into the crime, and eventually breaks down and confesses.
Raskalnikov and the Schoolboys on the island were both "like sheep without a shepherd". Porfiry Petrovich and the Rescuers were both "types" of shepherds, rounding up these miserable sinners, and getting then to see the sin in themselves. In "Lord of the Flies" (Another name for the devil), the realization is instant. In "Crime and Punishment", it is a long, drawn-out process involving the various stages of repentance: Denial, Hubris, Self-Righteousness, Self-Justification, Lying, and finally, Confession.
In both cases, it took a Shepherd to bring it about.

Joining in prayer for peace. By the way, I enjoyed reading about
the Mossad's clever assassination of Iran's nuclear-bomb architect.
Previously, you've indicated you were saved at age eight, and that you are a voracious and dedicated Bible reader and studier. Aside from enjoying literature, when did you begin regular Bible reading?

I was TWENTY-eight when I was saved. I even know my exact Born-Again Birthday 10/18/81, I will be celebrating my 40th Anniversary this year. So, I’ve been reading the Bible for 40 years.
Maybe there was a typo somewhere along the way that made you think I was 8. I’ll admit, I started “Questioning” at that tender age! :-)

I remember you telling the story of going to church with your aunt IIRC at 8--obviously IDRC.
I was 28, too, but since I'm three years older than you....
I met Cheryl and Jesus the same week--in fact, she was sitting next to me when I met Jesus. Obviously, like Adam, He decided "It is not good for the Dan to be alone," and two months later we were engaged. And the rest is His-story.

Aha! Now I remember!
It wasn’t Church, it was the Movies...and it was “The Story of Ruth”. I was so impressed by the Hollywood version that when I finally read the Book of Ruth twenty years later, I was surprised at how short it was.

Denial, Hubris, Self-Righteousness, Self-Justification, Lying, and finally, Confession.
It seems we see so much of this in politicians (except for confession) in our evil days.
