Pope considers making Cdl. Cupich new prefect of Congregation for Bishops: report

If appointed, Cupich would have the most power in the Church, second only to that of the Pope, over the appointment of bishops throughout the world.

VATICAN CITY, February 5, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — On January 30, Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago traveled to Rome to meet with the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops. Sources in Rome say that Pope Francis is considering promoting Cupich to the position of prefect of that congregation, replacing Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who is set to leave the post this year, the Catholic News Agency reported.

The Holy See press office listed Pope Francis as having received both Cupich and Ouellet the morning of January 30, but provided no more details about the meeting.

Ouellet has served as prefect of the Congregation for Bishops since 2010, when Pope Benedict XVI installed him in the position. In June 2020, Ouellet reached 75 years of age, the traditional age at which bishops are required to submit their resignation.

A Vatican insider told CNA that the Pope is “seriously considering making a surprise appointment, a bishop from the peripheries” as the new head of the congregation. Until now, expectations have been with Bishop Robert Francis Prevost of Chiclayo, Peru, as Ouellet’s replacement. Prevost was appointed as bishop of Chiclayo in 2015 by Pope Francis.

Now, however, CNA’s source said that Cupich, who was appointed as a member of the Congregation for Bishops in July 2016, is the front-runner for the position due to “the message that his appointment would deliver regarding the type of bishops he [Francis] wants for the Church,” as well as his heightened public profile.

Cupich has a long history of playing down the importance of combating abortion, going back at least 10 years. As bishop of Spokane, he instructed priests and seminarians within his jurisdiction “to refrain from participating in demonstrations in front of Planned Parenthood clinics or supporting ‘40 Days for Life.’”

He’s a modernist , anti-life fraud of the first degree. He made cardinal on the recommendation of the serial homosexual sex predator McCarrick and Bergoglio intends on rewarding another member of the Lavender Mafia, He was was hostile to pro lifers in Spokane. I am a Knight of Columbus in the Diocese of Spokane, He lets anyone go up for communion. He’s a disaster.
When he left Spokane the Bishop White Seminary was on the verge of closing.

As a Chicago Catholic, I hope this promotion means a transfer to some other country...or planet.

He has the spine of a wet noodle.

Bergoglio could probably do worse...but it’s hard to see how. Cupich is a disaster... a not very bright, ‘progressive’ yes-man, which is what Bergoglio likes.

Dear God, will this nightmare ever end? Soupy is one of the absolute worst: A sworn enemy of pro-lifers. A sworn enemy of the Latin Mass. A chief promoter of homosexuality.

This proves totally that the Pope is not a man of God! Cardinal Cupich should not have been elevated to Cardinal. He is also not a man of God! Both men have a disregard for the teachings of the Catholic Church and of Jesus Christ! Jesus was the respecte of tradition to the fullest extent. Pope Francis condemns traditionalists. Cardinal Cupich does not speak for the little ones being slaughtered. Neither man stands up for what they should. Neither one should be in a position to alter the beliefs of traditional Catholics. I pray that their successors will be real Catholics in the fullest sense. I cannot do anything else to affect their wrong decisions except to speak against them, and I do!

This is terrible news. Cupich is not a good clergyman or bishop. He has shuttered many Chicago churches.

CDF is usually considered the 2nd most powerful position.

Maybe that’s lessened with the new focus away from theology?

OK. The wannabee international ruling class (represented in the USA by the Democrats) has a Pope. Does the Roman Catholic Church?
