John 21

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

In reinstating Peter, Jesus asks him three times: "Do You Love Me?". This is perhaps because Peter denied Jesus three times.

Our God!

It Is Fitting to Those Who Love You To Lift Up Your Holy Name,
To Exalt You, and to Exalt in the Glory of Your Holiness!
For You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,
Rock of Ages,
Ancient of Days!
Thank You, Almighty, Everlasting Father,
For Your Eternal Promise to Your People!
Thank You For Your Holy, Immutable Word,
Which Stands the Scrutiny of Time.
Thank You For Your Faithfulness,
And For Being True To Your Covenants,
Even When We Are Not.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the very successful movie trilogy The Godfather, there is a pivotal scene. Michael, who is now the leader of the family, embraces his not-to-bright elder brother Fredo and says "You Broke My Heart." Just like THAT, we all know that Fredo is not long for this world. His betrayal of the family will be avenged, but it will be when Michael decides. At that moment though, Fredo knows his life is over. And, sure enough, while out in a boat fishing, Fredo ends up literally "sleeping with the fishes" of Lake Tahoe.

Peter, guilt-ridden and grief-stricken after his betrayal of his Beloved Master, finds himself fishing out on Lake Kinneret (Galilee) in an attempt to go back to his old life as a fisherman. It had been a wonderful three years with Jesus, but, at the very end of that adventure, Peter blew it and denied Jesus, not once, but THREE times! And the look that Jesus gave him in that courtyard, just as the rooster was crowing, said to him, "Peter, YOU BROKE MY HEART!" It was a wonder that Jesus didn't strike him dead right then and there. "Sleeping with the fishes" probably even looked good at this point. But, unlike Judas, Peter was not going to go that route. Something inside kept him going, even though he hadn't caught a single fish all night.

Wait! Who was that grilling fish on the beach? It's the LORD! The nets are lowered one more time and, just like that day when Peter first met Jesus, there was an abundance of fish. It looked like Peter would not be "sleeping" with them after all.

Jesus called Peter aside and asked him three times, "Peter, do you love Me?" This was perhaps because Peter had denied Jesus three times. Each time Peter answered in the affirmative, Jesus said, "FEED MY SHEEP." And so, Peter was reinstated, but not as a "fisherman". He was now being ordained as a Shepherd, from which we derive the office of "Pastor".

His job will no longer be "fishing" but "feeding" the flock of God.

The price of betrayal and the wages of sin is DEATH. But, unlike in the scene at Lake Tahoe, Jesus is on the shore, calling us in. He does not take vengeance for our betrayal of Him, but rather calls us to Him, saying, "Come and Dine!"

It's an offer you can't refuse.
