.
Matthew 1
The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
1 This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David, the son of Abraham:
2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.
New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)
There is a reason why the story of Judah and Tamar is stuck right in the middle of the Joseph Story in the Book of Genesis.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
On February 8th, less from a month from today, we will be acknowledging the 11th Birthday of this thread. A lot of weird changes have happened in the world in 11 years, but the Word of God abides forever, and is the same Yesterday, Today, and Always.
Early on, we studied the Story of the Patriarch Joseph, and have done so many times since in the past 11 years. It is one of my favorite stories in the old Testament, and never grows old for me. The first time we went through it, Chapter 38 stuck out like a sore thumb. It seemed to interrupt the thrilling Joseph Story with a scandalous incident involving Judah and his daughter-in-Law Tamar. Here is a Link to that Chapter.
After reading that, you may wonder why that ended up where it did, or even why it was in Scripture at all. It doesn't put Judah in a very nice light.
Today's Bible Passage is the First Chapter of Matthew, the Genealogy of Jesus. This is yet another Bible Passage that puts the brakes on our reading, as it occurs right before the Christmas Story and just seems like a whole list of "Begats". And yet, it's all connected.
First, let's go back to Genesis 38. While it seems to be in an awkward place, it shows what was going on in Jacob's family while Joseph was in Egypt. We can get all wrapped up in Joseph's story, as if the Family story was put on hold while Joseph was serving in Potiphar's house, languishing in prison, winning the favor of Pharaoh, and coordinating a huge national project to survive the coming famine. Chapter 38 gives us a glimpse into the lives of the brothers back home during this long period of time. As we can see, it was not all one big happy family. In fact, some of the things that went on were worthy of a soap opera script!
Why would the Author of Genesis include this sordid tale? And why would Matthew include Tamar in his carefully composed Genealogy of Jesus?
Tamar bore twins due to her encounter with Judah. One of these twins, Perez, was to become an ancestor of King David. King David was an ancestor of Jesus. Both Jesus and David were descendants of Judah, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham. By mentioning Judah and Tamar, Matthew was affirming Jesus's "credentials" as Messiah.
What does that have to do with our study of "Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds"? Looking at the story again, we see that Judah agreed to pay Tamar (whom he thought was a Temple Prostitute) with a young animal from his flock. Once again, livestock is being used as "currency".

Psalm 11
To the leader. Of David.
1 In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me,
‘Flee like a bird to the mountains;*
2 for look, the wicked bend the bow,
they have fitted their arrow to the string,
to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.
3 If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?’
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold, his gaze examines humankind.
5 The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,
and his soul hates the lover of violence.
6 On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulphur;
a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.
7 For the Lord is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face.
