Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Last month, a person posted a comment about this verse in Micah. It concerned a theory about "The Watchtower of the Flock." Intrigued, I looked it up. There were a number of articles saying that the shepherds in the fields were not ordinary shepherds, but were in charge of raising perfect lambs for Passover. Then it went on to describe the lambs being swaddled and placed in a manger in the "Watchtower of the Flock", thus predicting Jesus's birth and subsequent death as the Passover Lamb. I was really interested in this, as it seemed to be a "Hidden Prophecy" in the bible that nobody had considered. So, of course, I dug deeper. I love stuff like that!

Well, as I searched, I found out that this theory was first mentioned in the 19th Century, and had no basis in either the Bible, Hebrew Writings of the First Century, or even the secular historians of the era. (sigh). It was a lovely story, perhaps even a parable, but it had no foundation in fact. Then I realized, that, even if it was true, there were so many unquestionably fulfilled prophecies in the Bible that the "watchtower story" was not essential to my faith. If one wanted to believe it, it didn't hurt, but I don't think it would be as convincing to an unbeliever, like Micah 5:2, Isaiah 53, or Psalm 22. In spite of the apocryphal story, the verse is powerful. Micah 4:8 speaks of a Shepherd Whose vigilance protects His flock. The Messiah is both Shepherd and Warrior, Watchman and Place of Refuge. He is our Strong Tower and our Mighty Fortress. He is also the Lamb of God, which the anecdote tried to illustrate. But there are hundreds of Bible passages that state that fact much more plainly.

As you know, I love to tell stories and parables to illustrate the Gospel. But I tread lightly in the area of making up my own interpretation of God's Word.

Today is the Christian Day of Epiphany, which commemorates the visit of the Magi. By the time the Magi got to Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph were living is a "House" rather than the stable where Jesus was born. It could have been within a two-year time period, because of Herod's decree to murder all the baby boys two years old and under. So even placing the Magi in a Manger Scene is probably inaccurate. And yet, we know of the visit, we know about the gifts, and we know that they were warned in a dream to go home a different way to avoid Herod. That's what important!

This is a little personal guideline for me:

If there is a conflict between Tradition and Scripture, I go with Scripture.

It hasn't led me astray in nearly 40 years, so sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones!

HAPPY EPIPHANY!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 100

A Psalm of thanksgiving.

1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.

3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;*
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.

5 For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

I'm sooooooo glad you exercise discretion and circumspection in handling God's Word. My respect for the depth of your faith and understanding thus continues growing. You're like This Old House: He Who began a good work in you has passed all renovation inspections so far.

So, it is my pleasure to join with your persistent prayer.
