Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Micah 2:12-13

Deliverance Promised

12 “I will surely gather all of you, Jacob;
    I will surely bring together the remnant of Israel.
I will bring them together like sheep in a pen,
    like a flock in its pasture;
    the place will throng with people.

13 The One who breaks open the way will go up before them;
    they will break through the gate and go out.
Their King will pass through before them,
    the Lord at their head.”

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

The Prophet Micah is not actually a "Shepherd" by profession, but like Amos, uses shepherd imagery to proclaim the Word of God.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I have told this story before, but since there are some new Prayer warriors following this Thread, I hope you don't mind my sharing it again, especially as we look at The Prophet Micah in our exploration of "Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds" in the Bible.

Bethlehem in 1984 was different than it is now. There were more Christians than Moslems, no protective walls, and there was a thriving local tourist industry specializing in The Nativity. Craft shops lined the road, and we visited many of them. In fact, my Olive Wood Nativity Set is sitting on my coffee table as I write this. It has survived an 11 hour transatlantic flight, 6 moves (two of which were interstate) and five dogs. It still smells faintly of olives when I open the box every year to set it up.

And so, in October of 1984, in the Trip-Of-A-Lifetime, my husband and I found ourselves in the middle of the Shepherds' Fields in the hills outside of Bethlehem. The two of us and a busload of Pentecostal Christians fit nicely beside a stone windbreak, out on the windy hillside. A few shepherds (complete with sandals, robes, and staffs) were hanging around, keeping watch.

"Be sure and get back to the bus before dark," said Avi, our guide. "The bus will be moving down the road at sunset, and there are no lights out here."

While we marveled at the fact that we were out in the Shepherds Fields, one of our number miraculously pulled out a guitar. She asked if anybody knew how to play.

Well, I DID...it's what I did for a LIVING, so I took the guitar, tuned it to the best of my ability, and began to play every Christmas Song I knew. Well, everybody began to sing, and we started "having church" right there in the middle of the field. We sang and sang and worshiped and sang some more. The shepherds looked at us like we were crazy, but we didn't care. We sang and marveled at the beauty of the night as the stars came out and filled the sky in a way I had never seen before.

Then we realized it was DARK! We had to find our way to the bus, which we obviously had MISSED, and was a mile further down the road. We held hands and a little flock of 30 people moved in a body back the way we came, and walked until we saw the lights of the bus about a mile down the road, like a beacon. When we finally got there, Avi "shepherded" us onto the bus, grumbling about these "Crazy Kind of Christians" he got stuck with.

A week later, Avi took us to Yad Va Shem, Jerusalem's Holocaust Museum. After going through that devastating experience, I came out the exit to find two tour buses. Avi and another guide were smoking cigarettes and waiting for their tourists to finish the tour of the Museum. They were chatting in Hebrew, not knowing I could understand what they were saying.

Bus Driver: "You brought CHRISTIANS to Yad Va Shem? I NEVER bring CHRISTIANS to Yad Va Shem!"

Avi: "Ah...but these are REAL Christians!"

I have treasured that in my heart for 36 years.

Today we look at the Prophet Micah. Even though Micah never listed his profession as "Shepherd", he uses a lot of imagery in his Prophecy. He is also noted as predicting the exact town of Messiah's Birth, as we shall see.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

A lovely story, from a lovely REAL Christian. My first time reading it, because I'm still just a PWS2: Prayer Warrior Second Class. (Haven't gotten my Full Armor yet.)

You treasuring it in your heart evokes for me Mary doing the same, along with those wonderful things I treasure. How fantastic that our Lord first endows us with that ability to treasure and then gives us such precious memories!

And so, understanding more now how dear are your T-o-a-L memories, I join enthusiastically today's heartfelt prayer: So be it!

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 46

To the leader. Of the Korahites. According to Alamoth. A Song.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present* help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of the city;* it shall not be moved;
God will help it when the morning dawns.
6 The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.*
Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord;
see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 ‘Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth.’
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.*
Selah

My prayers are weak. I am tearful. I say God's will be done, but.... I want it to be my way.
