Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Most of the Psalms were written by David, who started out as a shepherd. Like Jacob, generations before him, David knew that his family's wealth was wrapped up in those stubborn, crazy sheep. He could keep them in a pen at night, but when morning came, he had to lead them out into new territory for grazing. Further and further out he would have to lead them, as the sheep would chomp up all the local grass, and so the land needed to rest until grass could grow back closer to home. Sometimes, they would be too far from the pen to head back by nightfall, and the shepherd would have to stay awake all night, watching over his flock. David had to fight off quite a few predators in his day, both the four-legged and two-legged varieties.

The Psalmist gives us a picture of the shepherd, herding his flock into the pen for the night. As they pass under his staff, he counts them, as accurately as an accountant counting money. And, like the accountant, and even Jacob before him, David is satisfied that none our lost. Whom God has given him, the enemy can not snatch even a single wayward sheep from His loving hand.
