Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Amos 7

Amos and Amaziah

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying:

“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
    and Israel will surely go into exile,
    away from their native land.’”

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”

14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 Now then, hear the word of the Lord. You say,

“‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
    and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’

17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city,
    and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword.
Your land will be measured and divided up,
    and you yourself will die in a pagan[c] country.
And Israel will surely go into exile,
    away from their native land.’”

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Nobody likes Bad News, even if it is the Truth. But "good news", if it is a lie, is flattery, or even worse, "gaslighting".

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This morning, while having breakfast, I turned on the TV to see a HUGE Auditorium filled with people. It turned out to be a church service. Knowing that such large gatherings are forbidden in today's world, I wondered where this marvelous group was...until a "chyron" appeared at the bottom of the screen stating that this service was recorded back in 2019, before the pandemic.

Anyway, I figured that, with a crowd that size, the preacher was probably going to preach a popular "Prosperity Message". (Not that God doesn't bless His Children, but some folks go overboard). Anyway, the preacher looked straight into the eyes of his enormous congregation, and said:

"Turn with me in your Bibles to the BOOK OF JOB".

He then began an incredible half hour talk on Patience in the face of horrible suffering. Of course, this coincided perfectly with my "WORD FOR THE YEAR" and I was greatly blessed by the Preacher's integrity.

The gist of his message was that "Patience" was actually FAITH in the Goodness of God.

What a Wonderful Personal Message for ME, this bleak January Morning in 2021!

The Prophet Amos encountered the same problem that Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, and Isaiah did. People don't want to hear "bad news" even if it is the Truth. They would rather surround themselves with "prophets" who only predict happy things. Like the Jack Nicholson character exclaimed in "A Few Good Men", they "can't handle the truth".

But, all the "bad news" prophets temper their Message of Truth with the GOOD NEWS of God's Grace. Just like Major and Minor chords in Music, Grace and Truth are in harmony with each other. Law and Mercy, Shepherd and King, Grace and Truth, High Priest and Sacrificial Victim, Judge and Advocate, God and Man, all of these qualities and more are present in Our Great Shepherd, The Lord Jesus. What seem to be opposites exist eternally together in harmony. Theologians who are much smarter than I have a word for it, but the concept is beyond our understanding. That's where Faith and Patience come in!

May You Be Blessed in the New Year!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

How lovely that Amos was able to “stand firm in (his) faith” and thereby inspire us to do the same.

Psalm 102

A prayer of one afflicted, when faint and pleading before the Lord.

1 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
let my cry come to you.
2 Do not hide your face from me
on the day of my distress.
Incline your ear to me;
answer me speedily on the day when I call.

3 For my days pass away like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.
4 My heart is stricken and withered like grass;
I am too wasted to eat my bread.
5 Because of my loud groaning
my bones cling to my skin.
6 I am like an owl of the wilderness,
like a little owl of the waste places.
7 I lie awake;
I am like a lonely bird on the housetop.
8 All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who deride me use my name for a curse.
9 For I eat ashes like bread,
and mingle tears with my drink,
10 because of your indignation and anger;
for you have lifted me up and thrown me aside.
11 My days are like an evening shadow;
I wither away like grass.

12 But you, O Lord, are enthroned for ever;
your name endures to all generations.
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to favour it;
the appointed time has come.
14 For your servants hold its stones dear,
and have pity on its dust.
15 The nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth your glory.
16 For the Lord will build up Zion;
he will appear in his glory.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute,
and will not despise their prayer.

18 Let this be recorded for a generation to come,
so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord:
19 that he looked down from his holy height,
from heaven the Lord looked at the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners,
to set free those who were doomed to die;
21 so that the name of the Lord may be declared in Zion,
and his praise in Jerusalem,
22 when peoples gather together,
and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.

23 He has broken my strength in mid-course;
he has shortened my days.
24 ‘O my God,’ I say, ‘do not take me away
at the mid-point of my life,
you whose years endure
throughout all generations.’

25 Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will perish, but you endure;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You change them like clothing, and they pass away;
27 but you are the same, and your years have no end.
28 The children of your servants shall live secure;
their offspring shall be established in your presence.

So often we hear only what we want to hear—good news.

And the preacher was hearing from God in 2019.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
